We love the handful of gorgeous indie bars, restaurants and shops and desirable property, including spacious Victorian family homes in the coveted poets corner, a series of streets named after famous wordsmiths (think Shakespeare, Milton, Chaucer). Throw in the fact some of the best school&#8217;s in London are on the doorstep plus an overland station with direct trains to Blackfriars and Victoria – it&#8217;s little wonder house prices are on the rise.   </p>

<p>With so many good restaurants on the doorstep, you&#8217;re not going to need to head out of the area for food. <a href="https://www.archieshernehill.co.uk/menu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Archies</a> serves Latin American feasts and excellent cocktails (the Pisco sours are potent), <a href="http://utterwaffle.co.uk/menu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Utter Waffle Herne Hill&#8217;s</a> where to head for a carb fix (the signature chicken waffles and avo smash have appeared on <em>Saturday Kitchen</em>) and <a href="https://www.florencehernehill.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Florence Herne Hill</a> is the kind of neighbourhood gastro pub everyone wants at the end of their road on a Sunday to fill up on&nbsp;roast beef with horseradish crème fraîche and all the trimmings. </p>



<p>For posh nosh visit Muddy Stilettos 2025 award-winning restaurant <a href="https://www.maremmarestaurant.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Maremma</a>, and for an intimate catch up with friends (or a date night) it&#8217;s got to be <a href="https://lulus.london" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lulus</a>, a tiny, ambient wine bar, deli and evening restaurant serving delicious bites like marinate sardines and cured bass, cucumber and aguachile. </p>

<p>Plenty for shopaholics to get excited about as Herne Hill&#8217;s well-known for its stylish indie stores like <a href="https://brothersgreenuk.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brothers Green</a>, a lifestyle shop selling houseplants and pots on one side, preloved homeware and vintage clothes on the other. <a href="https://www.whitefeatherboutique.co.uk/pages/about" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">White Feather</a>&#8216;s a unique boutique selling quirky, original mens and women&#8217;s clothes, while <a href="https://www.ilovelowie.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lowie&#8217;s</a> a Herne Hill-based clothing brand and store where you can pick up sustainable pieces for a steal. And then there&#8217;s Herne Hill Market, which takes place every Sunday in Station Square and has more than 50 stalls selling everything from vintage to vinyl. </p>

<p><a href="https://www.fusion-lifestyle.com/centres/brockwell-lido/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brockwell Lido&#8217;s</a> one of London&#8217;s best outdoor swim experiences. It’s very cold (great in a heatwave, not so much when it’s 7˚C) so we&#8217;d highly recommend  investing in a wetsuit and Dryrobe for year-round dips. There’s also a gym, spa and yoga classes on site and a lovely restaurant to refuel in post-swim.&nbsp;Work on your cardio with a cycling sesh at the <a href="https://www.hernehillvelodrome.com/sessions" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Herne Hill Velodrome</a>. </p>



<p>If you need a more heart-raising, no pain no gain kinda approach to your health, <a href="https://www.fisonfitness.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fison Fitness</a> has two studios (just a minute from the station, so no excuses) offering personal training and high intensity fitness classes, as well as more mindful yoga, Pilates and movement classes. </p>



<p>Brockwell Park&#8217;s 126 acres of sprawling green space is ideal for picnics, games and walks that feel more like you&#8217;re in the countryside than the capital. Get to know the area with a gentle 2.9km <a href="https://www.alltrails.com/en-gb/parks/england/brockwell-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brockwell Circular</a> walk which leads you past duck ponds, a charming 19th Century clock tower and beautiful Brockwell Hall which the park&#8217;s named after. </p>

<p>A strong community vibe is one of Herne&#8217;s Hill&#8217;s biggest attractions. Whether it&#8217;s supporting talented kids at live music venue <a href="https://dice.fm/venue/off-the-cuff-z688" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Off The Cuff</a>, which runs one of the UK&#8217;s biggest open mic night for youngsters, to a community partnership to preserve and restore <a href="https://brockwellparkcommunitypartners.org.uk/brockwell-hall-the-latest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brockwell House</a>, there are plenty of projects to get involved with. <a href="https://southlondonmakerspace.org">South London Makerspace</a> is another brilliant initiative run by volunteers where you can pick up new skills like sewing and woodwork and meet residents. </p>

<p>Brixton&#8217;s a 10 min walk away, home to one of London&#8217;s best markets, top restaurants and great night life – from clubbing at <a href="https://www.brixtonjamm.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brixton Jamm</a> to rooftop cocktails in <a href="https://www.pergolabrixton.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pergola</a>. In the other direction, Dulwich Village is super quaint, think chic boutiques and amazing period mansions to gawp at (we&#8217;re talking some of the most covetable in London). </p>

<p>The overall average price for a property is £863,393, which is pricey but a bit of a bargain compared to some areas of Central and North London. You can pick up a flat for around £510,000, terraces ring in around £1,064,000 and semi-detached houses sell for an average of £2,054,000. </p>

Places at <a href="https://www.halfmoonmontessori.co.uk">Halfmoon Montessori Nursery</a> for ages 2-4yrs are also coveted due to its child-centred approach to education and variety of outdoor spaces.</p>

<p><a href="https://hernehillschool.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Herne Hill</a><a href="https://hernehillschool.co.uk"> Schoo</a><a href="https://www.halfmoonmontessori.co.uk">l</a> is a brilliant (and convenient) place to kick off their education with a Kindergarten and Pre-Prep&nbsp;for kids ages 2-7 yrs. Alternatively, <a href="https://www.thedulwichestate.org.uk/about-us/who-we-support/james-allen-s-girls-school" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">St Jude&#8217;s Church of England Primary School</a> is also on the doorstep and rated Ofsted Good while <a href="https://www.charternorthdulwich.org.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Charter School</a> in North Dulwich is an Ofsted brilliant state secondary option. Nearby<a href="https://london.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/dulwich-prep-dulwich/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Dulwich Prep &amp; Senior School</a> is the largest boys&#8217; Prep in the country, covers 29 acres and includes boarding. <a href="https://www.dulwich.org.uk/senior-school" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dulwich College</a> is another strong independent school choice for boys aged 7-18 yrs (it awarded 193 bursaries in the last year), while <a href="https://www.thedulwichestate.org.uk/about-us/who-we-support/james-allen-s-girls-school">James Allen&#8217;s Girls&#8217; School</a> (affectionally known as JAGS locally) is the top option for girls locally. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret-nbsp">BEST KEPT SECRET&nbsp;</h2>



<p>There are some famous residents in this South East London enclave, including food critic Jay Rayner and actress Olivia Colman. Plus it&#8217;s also featured in movies. Remember the <em>Love Actually</em> scene where Prime Minister Hugh Grant goes to the home of his assistant Martine McCutcheon? It was filmed in Herne Hill&#8217;s Poplar Road. And <em>We Live in Time</em>, starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield released in last year was set there too, you can spot Brockwell Park and the station. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute-nbsp">COMMUTE&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A Zone 2 overland station&#8217;s a major result, as it means you can hop on a train and be at Blackfriars, Farringdon, St Pancras International and Victoria in less than 30 mins. If you need the tube, Brixton and the Victoria Line is a 10 min walk. Plus there are loads of buses running night and day into Central London.</p>
