<p>For unbeatable bento boxes and yakisoba noodles, it&#8217;s got to be <a href="https://tarorestaurants.uk/locations/walthamstow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Taro Walthamstow</a> which lies in a former pie and mash shop (it kept the original tiles and interiors, go see). Make a beeline for brunch at <a href="https://www.dudleyscoffee.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dudley&#8217;s</a> (eggs and Bloody Mary&#8217;s if you&#8217;re feeding a hungover) and for jerk chicken and plantain fritters galore, pull up a chair (and rum cocktail) at <a href="https://rhythmkitchen.co" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rhythm Kitchen E17</a>. </p>



<p>Vegan? Hunt out the brilliantly named <a href="https://www.instagram.com/covenofwiches/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Coven of Wiches</a> in Wood Street Indoor Market for plant-based deli snacks and a cheeky drink too (it doubles as a bar). Best coffee? Locals love <a href="https://www.hucks.org.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hucks</a> on Grove Road, which has the added advantage of a recording studio, so you can lay down a track while giving yourself a caffeine boost. Walthamstow is also the home of <a href="https://supperclub.tube" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Supper Club Tube</a>, where you and your fellow diners get to eat three courses in a disused tube carriage. <p>Most Londoners have heard of the neon-filled wonder that is <a href="https://www.godsownjunkyard.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">God&#8217;s Own Junkyard,</a> but not that many have actually ridden to the end of the Victoria Line to check it out. Filled to capacity with neon signs, art and film props, it really is the treasure trove you need to light up your life. <a href="https://www.e17arthouse.com/artists" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">E17 Art House</a> is a great little gallery selling work by a range of international artists (plus cards, gifts and a framing service). </p>



<p>You can easily lose a Saturday morning trawling through vinyl, vintage clothes, antiques, jewellery, plants and Moroccan goodies in the 30-plus indie stores at <a href="https://www.woodstreetindoormarket.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wood Street Indoor Market</a>. <a href="https://www.walthamforest.gov.uk/libraries-arts-parks-and-leisure/local-markets/walthamstow-market" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Walthamstow outdoor market</a> is also legendary, dating back to 1885 it&#8217;s the longest in Europe (one-kilometre), and sells everything from homeware to clothing and food. </p>

<p><a href="https://www.eastofeden.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">East of Eden</a> has exploded from a humble neighbourhood spot into one of London’s top yoga hubs, offering over 100 classes a week (yep, you read that right). From hatha to reformer Pilates, barre and spin, there’s something for everyone. Don’t forget to grab a vegan snack post-class.</p>



<p>Heard of the <a href="https://www.wildlondon.org.uk/nature-reserves/walthamstow-wetlands" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Walthamstow Wetlands</a>? Well now you have so there&#8217;s no excuse not to explore the borough&#8217;s 13 wild miles of reservoirs, winding pathways, greenery and home to king fishers, herons and birds of prey. Nature lovers will also be happy to hear that Walthamstow&#8217;s edged by <a href="https://www.visiteppingforest.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Epping Forest</a>, so if you move here you can enjoy woodland strolls on your doorstep. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community">COMMUNITY </h2>



<p>There&#8217;s lots going on in this neck of the woods, including the annual <a href="https://e17films.com/walthamstow-international-film-festival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Walthamstow International Film Festival</a> (this year 78 new short films were shown over a weekend in June), art exhibitions and an honesty library at <a href="https://themille17.org/whats-on/current-exhibition/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Mill</a> and <a href="https://bigpennysocial.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Big Penny Social </a>(clue&#8217;s in the name), which is way more than a great bar and restaurant – think co-working space, bands, fairs, film screenings, quizzes, sports broadcasts and exhibitions.</p>

<p>Explore the grasslands and wildlife at Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) <a href="https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/green-spaces/epping-forest/where-to-go-in-epping-forest/wanstead-flats" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wanstead Flats</a> to the East, enjoy Hackney and Bethnal Green&#8217;s banging nightlife, indie stores and restaurants to the South and Muswell Hill and Hampstead&#8217;s gorgeous architecture and expansive parks to the West. </p>

<p>Cool creative (and King of Wallpaper) William Morris lived in Walthamstow and his Bridgerton-esque former home is now a <a href="https://www.wmgallery.org.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">museum</a> packed to the rafters with his designs. Big name comedians like Sara Pascoe and Alan Carr have played <a href="http://www.redimpcomedy.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Red Imp Comedy Club</a>, a monthly event at Ye Olde Rose &amp; Crown Theatre Bar. </p>

Genius. You can rest assured little ones are in good hands at Ofsted Outstanding <a href="https://woodstnursery.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wood St Nursery</a>, where managers Naomi and Beth run a calm, family-style nursery for tots aged 11 months to five years. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-schools">SCHOOLS </h2>



<p>Independent school-wise <a href="https://walthamstowmontessori.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Walthamstow Montessori School</a> is highly regarded, mixed, and caters for children aged 3–6 yrs, then it&#8217;s on to <a href="https://www.forest.org.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Forest School </a>(mixed, 4-18 yrs) on the edge of leafy Epping Forest, <a href="https://www.normanhurstschool.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norman Hurst School</a> (6–16 yrs) close to Chingford or, a little further afield, it&#8217;s easy to hop on the tube to reach shiny new <a href="https://muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/dld-college-london-westminster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DLD College</a> (there&#8217;s an option to board). <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret">BEST KEPT SECRET </h2>



<p><em>&#8220;Baby if you&#8217;ve got to go away, don&#8217;t think I can take the pain.&#8221;</em> Yes, Walthamstow is where Nineties boy band E17 hail from – they even shot a video there at the famous Walthamstow Dog Racing Stadium which Brad Pitt and Vinnie Jones used to frequent (strange but true). Although it&#8217;s been demolished and made into flats, you can still see the iconic entrance and sign today. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>There&#8217;s an abundance of transport links. First off it&#8217;s at the end of the Victoria Line on the underground, meaning you&#8217;re a 20 min ride from Oxford Circus, while an overland train will see you gliding into Liverpool Street Station in around 12 mins. A steady stream of buses are also ready to transport you around the city 24/7, particularly useful are super loop services SL1 and SL2. </p>
