<p>Scandinavia&#8217;s <a href="https://punkroyale.com/en/london/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Punk Royale</a> has restaurants in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo and now it&#8217;s landed in London, amid a fog of dry ice and blaring tunes. Opening in Mayfair&#8217;s Sackville Street on Friday (12 Sept) this party pad is aiming to shake up the area&#8217;s food scene by turning fine dining into fun dining with the aid of loud music, flourescent lighting, disco balls and more alcohol than you can handle &#8211; all while serving Michelin-standard food. </p>

<p>Noisy, boozy, unadulterated good times. If posh restaurant etiquette like hushed voices and knowing which cutlery to use for which course is important to you, then you probably shouldn&#8217;t book this relaxed, rebellious restaurant, where glow-in-the-dark art hangs on the walls, music isn&#8217;t reserved for the background, food&#8217;s eaten mainly with your hands and staff wear what they like (think shorts, Hawaiian shirts, Human Made slogan T-shirts). Best of all, mobile phones are locked in a box on arrival and not returned until the end of the meal, which means everyone actually talks and lets their hair down. Groundbreaking.  </p>

<p>This is the part that feels a bit like you&#8217;ve fallen down a rabbit hole. No menu&#8217;s presented, instead you&#8217;re treated to a succession of twenty-plus tiny courses, kicking off with a shot of vodka and bump of caviar to lick off your hand while standing at the open kitchen. </p>



<p>Once you&#8217;re sat down at your table with a glass of Champagne (and your phone&#8217;s been locked away), unique dishes come and go in a delicious blur &#8211; though that&#8217;s partly due to all the alcohol being endlessly poured to complement the cuisine, from white and red wine to malt beer and shots. </p>



<p>We slurped delicate razor clam from, err, a razor clam, ate a bite of tuna with red onion jam on vegan toast (a round of cucumber), crunched an oozy, finger-licking good cheese doodle (puffed pork skin with jalapeno and cheese cream and a ton of parmesan) served in newspaper, sipped a cute little shot of mushroom disguised as a pint of Guinness and were spoon-fed lobster by a model-like waiter. </p>



<p>The eclectic playlist (from Red Hot Chill Peppers to George Ezra via Abba and Natasha Beddingfield&#8217;s <em>Unwritten</em>) increased in volume, the dishes kept on coming and the wine flowed. Chicken liver served in a clear perspex bowl was so unctuous, I licked it clean with my finger, succulent guinea fowl turned up with (shock) a knife and fork. </p>



<p>Disco lights flashed, dry ice pumped into the room, music reached crescendo, hearing conversation got trickier, then suddenly Madonna&#8217;s <em>Like A Prayer</em> played &#8211; we grinned, sang the lyrics at the tops of our voices, while simultaneously chomping on a slither of turbot.  </p>

<p>By this stage it was so far removed from a normal restaurant experience, we simply went with the flow, sipping whatever new drink appeared, tasting all manner of witty dishes, like a single nugget with a dinky Heinz sachet of sauce and laughing at the relief of letting our monkey brains have a two-hour break from scrolling social media and checking emails.</p>



<p>When desserts appeared (Muddy&#8217;s memory is fuzzy at this stage, but the baked to perfection warm madeleines were a highlight), things started to wind down. The energy of the room changed as the music quietened and, surreally, we sucked on syringes of sweet white wine. </p>



<p>All too soon, we were reunited with our phones, hugging our hostess goodbye and working out how to get home &#8211; it was 11.35pm during a tube strike &#8211; but nothing could dampen our spirits after such a heady mix of flavours and off-line antics. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-child-friendly">CHILD FRIENDLY</h2>



<p>No. Older teens might enjoy the neon, noise and friendly staff, but their phones being taken away for two hours? Not so much.  </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility">ACCESSIBILITY</h2>



<p>The entrance leads straight into the restaurant from Sackville Street and staff are super helpful, the vertiginous stairs to the toilets would be a challenge though. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p>It&#8217;s a party in your mouth as well as in the room. Expect a slightly chaotic, sexy, fun dining experience, with top tunes, well curated drinks and sensational, unapologetically rich food, from caviar to creamy chicken liver. Likelihood of going home sober? 0 (unless you go for the juice option, obvs). </p>



<p><strong>GOOD FOR:</strong>&nbsp;Date nights (there&#8217;s loads to talk about, though you might have to shout), meeting up with your favourite foodie friends, anyone fed up with mobile phones dominating dinner time. </p>



<p><strong>NOT FOR:</strong>&nbsp;Fussy eaters &#8211; you don&#8217;t know what you will be served, or when. Mobile phone addicts. </p>



<p><strong>THE DAMAGE:</strong>&nbsp;£220pp for 18 courses and curated selection of alcohol; £200pp for 18 courses with non-alcoholic drinks. *Menus can be adapted for gluten, nuts, fish and shellfish allergies; Meat-free options include vegetarian (including egg and lactose) and pescetarian (including fish and shellfish) menus. </p>
