<p>Venture your way to one of East London&#8217;s coolest districts and you&#8217;ll find the <a href="https://www.townhallhotel.com/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Town Hall Hotel</a> located on a leafy tree lined avenue in urban Bethnal Green. The impressive Grade II listed building was restored to its former glory in 2020 &#8211; now home to 97 luxury rooms which includes 10 double bedrooms and 87 suites with fully fitted kitchens. A big pull here is that it&#8217;s also the location of two Michelin-star Da Terra &#8211; a restaurant rooted in chef Rafael Cagali&#8217;s Brazilian and Italian heritage. There&#8217;s also Restaurant Elis onsite &#8211; also overseen by Rafael, plus a bar, swimming pool, state-of-the-art gym and gorgeous private spaces for weddings and events. In-room spa treatments are available by Ruuby too. Don&#8217;t mind if we do.</p>



<p>Don&#8217;t be surprised to find yourself bumping into some of the Hollywood elite either. The hotel is often used as a filming location for film and TV (the council chamber is particularly impressive), and you may recognise it from the likes of <em>Atonement, Lock, Stock</em> and <em>Two Smoking Barrels</em>. Idris Elba and Celia Imrie have all been spotted in front of the camera here in recent years, so eyes peeled.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>Step inside the main lobby and you&#8217;ll be greeted by art deco styling that transports you straight back to 1930s Manhattan. A sweeping staircase, marble pillars, retro clock, and mid-century furniture are the defining features. However, feet are planted firmly in the 21st century with the Town Hall Hotel&#8217;s partnership with Faber books. You&#8217;ll find a unit brimming with many of the hot latest releases right by the check-in desk &#8211; free for all guests to borrow and curl up with during their stay. It&#8217;s a fabulous touch. <a href="https://muddystilettos.co.uk/travel/literary-travel-reading-retreats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Literary travel</a> is all the rage right now after all.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-and-quaff">SCOFF AND QUAFF</h2>

<p>Dinner time! Hotel guest or not, all are welcome to pull up a chair in Restaurant Elis. Expect rustic dishes with a Brazilian-Italian flavour, fabulous wine list, and a family-feasting style approach to dining. Menus change regularly and you&#8217;ll find a specials menu written up on the mirror in the main dining space with larger plates too. Naturally, we had the hard job of sampling the goods. I&#8217;ve never been an olive fan, but the marinated green olives were utterly gorgeous. I&#8217;d also highly recommend the cheese bread beef slider, salt cod croquette, and the cassava chips. Yum. Everything I ate was delicious.</p>



<p>Their Steak Wednesdays are well-worth keeping in the back locker too, where you get a Picanha steak, cassava chips and salad for £20 per person. They do a bring your own bottle night too which is a big hit with locals. </p>

<p>Design mavens will love the trendy interiors of the restaurant &#8211; the same place overnight guests enjoy a very delicious off-the-menu breakfast the following morning. Think a mishmash of hanging pendants, bold banquette seating, and cool tones of pastel blue. It&#8217;s very cool. Service is also incredibly friendly and efficient. There&#8217;s lots to love.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stay">STAY</h2>

<p>Stuffed to the high heavens, it was a short roll up the elevator to bed (hallelujah!) A significant benefit to staying at the Town Hall Hotel is the range of room options. Choose from double rooms, junior suites, plus huge one- and two-bedroom suites that you could quite frankly move into for the foreseeable. There&#8217;s also dedicated family packages with children’s activity packs and an extensive board game library. I was staying in a deluxe one-bed suite which comes equipped with its own kitchen, separate en suite, and dining area. </p>

<p>Honestly, it was massive. I was obsessed with the trendy interiors &#8211; from cool cowboy prints to the funky fabrics and bespoke furniture. It feels homely and urbane in equal measure, and somewhere you definitely want to pull out the phone for a quick Insta story. Inside the bathrooms, there&#8217;s gorgeous Percy &amp; Reed products to use, a giant bathtub, and fluffy robes. It&#8217;s super modern and clearly a lot of thought and care has been poured into the design here.</p>

<p>Kitchens are fully equipped with microwave, oven, hob, washing facilities, fridge freezer and stone-top work surface &#8211; very handy if you&#8217;re planning to stay longer than a weekend. CBA to cook? Room service is a phone call away for breakfast (until late summer), lunch or dinner. I love that my room also had views over London and nearby flats. A perfect opportunity for some good old property ogling. Honestly, I could have very happily moved in here for good. It&#8217;s worth noting some rooms have been newly refurbed, so may be worth requesting when you book. You can&#8217;t beat a bit of eau de freshly painted wall.</p>

<p>You&#8217;re in strutting distance of Charli xcx&#8217;s favourite London cocktail bar. Need I say more? <a href="https://www.satanswhiskers.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Satan&#8217;s Whiskers</a>, named the 21st best bar in the world, no less, is a super hip spot for concoctions of the alcoholic variety. Charli recommends anything vodka (solid choice). I recommend the Miami Vice &#8211; a 50/50 of Pina Colada and Strawberry Daiquiri which comes with a little umbrella and pineapple slice. Obsessed. It&#8217;s a taste of the Caribbean right here in East London. Prices are ridiculously reasonable too. </p>



<p>If you&#8217;re toting kids, the <a href="https://www.vam.ac.uk/young?srsltid=AfmBOoob2irXPl2J2k17kZtwve3BmQSIDU3P5m2oh9f8saBdquC2bMGP" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Young V&amp;A</a> is a short stomp away. Definitely check out the current Wallace and Gromit exhibition (on until Nov). Buzzy Shoreditch is just up the road, but if you want to head into the London nucleus, the central line is a five-minute stroll which can whizz you around in no time. It&#8217;s a great location to set up base.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Girly weekend getaways! It&#8217;s one of London&#8217;s coolest neighbourhoods with trendy bars, quirky indie boutiques, and street art all in striking distance. A two Michelin star restaurant onsite is a huge draw. Families will also love the variety of room options that come with kitchens.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> Lovers of pintsized boutiques.</p>



<p><strong>The damage:</strong> Room rates start from £220 per night for a double room. Signature suites from £499.</p>
