<p>Situated just off Carnaby Street and a short walk from Oxford Circus tube station, <a href="https://inkonitorestaurant.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Inko Nito’s</a> about as Central as you can get. Perfect for pre-theatre bites, lunch stops and post-shopping refuels, it’s convenient without feeling touristy and I took along my nine-year-old son Sol to try the kids&#8217; menu. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe-nbsp">THE VIBE&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Relaxed and contemporary. Reclaimed wood furnishings and slats hanging above the huge windows are a sleek nod to the East, while the shiny open kitchens where kids can watch chefs chop and grill are like live theatre. We perched on stools at a wooden counter facing the cooking stations, but there are a variety of tables and seating if your kids need something a little lower, including a handful of al fresco tables on Broadwick Street. Pink neon signs on the way to the toilets caused a stir and flurry of photos, ditto the wall of mirrors. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff-nbsp">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF&nbsp;</h2>

<p>I was slightly sceptical about what the £5 kids’ menu would consist of (to put things in perspective, a kids&#8217; chicken popcorn bucket at KFC is £4.99&#8230;), so I was pleasantly surprised when a dinky wooden tray of three vegan maki avocado and cucumber rolls arrived as a starter. Sol tucked in (whilst trying to master chopsticks) as my ‘adult’ dishes from the (extremely good value) £27 Taste of Inko menu were delivered to the table. Steamed prawn dumplings were juicy pockets of joy, baby gem lettuce with wafu sauce and chilli had zing and a Japanese fried breaded chicken came with a moreish peanut chilli yoghurt (neither of us could stop dipping until the bowl was clean). </p>

<p>Just as Sol finished his maki rolls, his second course of Japanese breadcrumb fried chicken and steamed rice with furikake appeared (the staff are on it). Meanwhile, I tucked into a salmon filet with ruby grapefruit and sansho salt which was delicious and piping hot straight from the grill &#8211; I have no scientific evidence, but seeing your food cooking in front of you when you&#8217;re hungry seems to make everything taste extra good by the time you eat it. Both mains went down extremely well (and quickly), though I added a side of tender stem broccoli with spicy chilli miso and steamed rice, so mine took a fraction longer to consume.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The final mouthfuls of our three-course meal were a scoop of vanilla ice cream (Sol) and a pretty pastel mochi selection (me). I loved the consistency of soft chewy rice cake with an ice cream centre, it was sweet, light and just right and I vowed to make some at home (I haven’t), while Sol declared the ice cream &#8216;skibidi&#8217; (which is a good thing in case you don&#8217;t speak nine-year-old).</p>



<p>Drinks wise there’s a decent sake, wine and cocktail menu for adults &#8211; plum punch, ichigo negroni and inko star (passion fruit, vodka, kaffir lime leaf) caught my eye &#8211; alongside ‘boozeless’ options too. Kids can choose from a soft drinks menu which includes Karma lemonade and Fever Tree apple and mint tipples.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict-nbsp">THE MUDDY VERDICT&nbsp;</h2>

<p>A meal at Inko Nito is great value for money in an area of London that’s notoriously expensive. To find somewhere that’s family-friendly yet still feels grown up and doesn’t cost the earth is a rare thing. Spread the word. </p>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Parents who want to feed their kids for less but still dine somewhere that feels sophisticated.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Not for: </strong>If your kids are picky eaters, they might not appreciate the sushi starter, though I doubt there would be many complaints about breaded chicken, rice and vanilla ice cream.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>The damage: </strong>Taste of Inko adult menu (available Mon-Thurs all day &amp; Fri noon-5pm), £27pp; kids’ menu, £5. That’s £32 for an adult and child to dine in a glam restaurant in Central London. You’re welcome.&nbsp;</p>
