<p>Broomwood is an inclusive environment, and our Junior Scholarship programme is designed to nurture the pupil&#8217;s passions and talents, whilst still keeping a broad horizon of opportunities open to them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-do-you-know-your-child-is-good-enough">How do you know your child is good enough?</h2>



<p>In addition to academic rigour and basic skills, we are looking for children who can problem solve and think critically and creatively. Applicants need to demonstrate the ability to work with others and to communicate well within a team. Our Broomwood Junior Scholarship assessment is going to be fun. The assessments will not be intimidating, but more of a light touch and exploratory. Our aim for this scholarship is to be very much about the whole child &#8211; the tenacity and aptitude to try lots of things.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-you-apply-for-a-scholarship-and-a-bursary-nbsp">Can you apply for a scholarship and a bursary?&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Currently we don’t have bursaries at Broomwood. We are working on a bursary programme and Dukes Education, our parent group, will be running a transformational bursary programme that will be in place next year. But generally, scholarships and bursaries are very separate and can be applied for separately. Across the sector, the financial reward for scholarships has decreased over time.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sceptics-suggest-scholarships-are-a-marketing-retention-tool-for-schools-what-would-you-say">Sceptics suggest scholarships are a marketing/retention tool for schools. What would you say?</h2>



<p>This is about so much more than retention, it is about giving children access to a first class education, opportunities to nurture and grow talented individuals.</p>



<p>We have a number of specialist teachers, many trained to GCSE and A Level, to the children are challenged. Also, Dukes has a junior leadership programme that is all about identifying talent &#8211; the Dukes Young Leaders programme &#8211; it’s a bit like DofE and goes across and beyond the curriculum and includes service, not just attainment, so there’s plenty to enrich beyond Year 6.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-so-you-re-launching-a-prep-school-scholarship">So, you’re launching a prep school scholarship?</h2>



<p>Yes. It’s the first time that Broomwood has offered a scholarship. We’ve brought it in for entry to the school for Year 3 for children from our pre-prep and external applicants, and then also for external entry to Year 4.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-it-s-unusual-to-offer-scholarships-at-prep-tell-us-why-you-ve-introduced-it">It’s unusual to offer scholarships at prep. Tell us why you’ve introduced it.</h2>



<p>It’s not totally unheard of to have scholarships at prep but it tends to be higher up the school. We felt we wanted to identify those children who have a talent, and then work with them throughout their time here to develop and nurture that talent. </p>



<p>Our track record for developing and nurturing talent speaks for itself, last year we achieved 42 scholarships to competitive senior schools &#8211; 27 academic and the rest shared between drama, art, music and sport. Included among those are schools like Winchester, JAGS and others. Our Junior Scholarship Programme will recognise this ability among younger pupils and be an opportunity for us to explore the curriculum and far beyond it.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-will-you-offer-your-scholars">What will you offer your scholars?</h2>



<p>The Junior Scholars would receive a 15% discount on fees, and to qualify they would need to commit to staying with us for at least two years and commit wholeheartedly to the school environment, behavioural expectations and culture. It will be reviewed again in Year 6 but we’d expect scholars to keep their award throughout their time here until Year 8.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-and-what-will-you-expect-from-them">And what will you expect from them?</h2>



<p>We want our scholarship students to actively take part across school life and all of the enrichment that we offer at Broomwood. We’re looking for children to engage across academic life &#8211; to thrive in their studies &#8211; but also enrich the school community with their talents and enthusiasm. Scholars will need a robust attitude and good organisational skills to take full advantage of Broomwood&#8217;s long and busy day. Unlike other local schools, our children stay until 5.20pm to complete their homework and clubs go until 6.20pm (Mon-Thurs). This scholarship is as much about that energy and enthusiasm as ability.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-so-there-s-enrichment-that-only-the-scholars-will-be-offered">So there’s enrichment that only the scholars will be offered?</h2>

<p>We have enrichment available to all children. Higher up the school, this might include visiting speakers, debating groups, workshops, masterclasses for sports, drama and music,&nbsp;but our scholars will be expected to attend. There are also opportunities for performance, both music and drama, and school trips abroad like our drama trip to New York and rugby in South Africa develop the children&#8217;s love for each field. These come at an extra charge though.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-anyone-apply-nbsp">Can anyone apply?&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Yes. Internal or external candidates. The first applications will be in January 2026 for entry the following September.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-can-the-candidates-expect-from-the-assessment-day">What can the candidates expect from the assessment day?</h2>



<p>Assessment takes place in January alongside our usual assessment days and children should see it as an opportunity for them to showcase their talent and for us to get to know them. It will be a mix of academic evaluation (ordinarily this would be a short piece of written prose) and children showing us what they enjoy doing.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-and-all-this-when-you-re-assessing-at-year-2">And all this when you’re assessing at Year 2?</h2>



<p>We are very aware that they are very little &#8211; we’re not expecting them to be polished, but with raw and sometimes untapped talent that we can then support and nurture. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-so-you-won-t-use-the-usual-academic-markers-like-cat-scores">So you won’t use the usual academic markers &#8211; like CAT scores?</h2>



<p>CAT is a useful tool but this is not CAT based &#8211; for the scholarship we are looking for something a bit extra.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-can-they-dazzle-you">How can they dazzle you<strong>?</strong></h2>

<p>We’re looking for children who think outside of the box with imaginative flair. Someone who shows pizzazz and something a bit extra. It could just be the way they take part in a team building exercise. They are young and children change a great deal so it’s strong academic promise we’re looking for &#8211; not necessarily attainment at this stage &#8211; then also a talent in one or more of sport, drama, music and art.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-do-you-expect-your-scholars-to-go-on-to-apply-for-senior-school-scholarships">Do you expect your scholars to go on to apply for senior school scholarships?</h2>



<p>Yes, we would. But we also expect children outside the Junior Scholarship programme to be looking to achieve scholarships at senior schools as well.  </p>



<p>We expect to give around four Junior Scholarships in a year group of 80 and usually around a third of our children achieve some sort of award when applying to senior schools.</p>
