<p>Global citizenship &#8211; it might sound like one of those glossy buzzwords schools love to slap on their prospectuses, but in reality, it’s becoming one of the most practical skill sets a child can develop. In today&#8217;s modern world &#8211; one shaped by rapid change, AI, and careers that are yet to exist &#8211; forward-thinking schools are shifting the focus away from rote learning and surface-level &#8216;international days&#8217; toward something far more meaningful: emotional intelligence, cultural fluency, adaptability, and the confidence to take action. It’s less about how many countries a child has ticked off and more about how well they understand different perspectives, communicate across cultures, and navigate an increasingly complex world with empathy and purpose. </p>



<p>If anyone recognises the importance of global citizenship as a skill, it&#8217;s the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.asl.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American School in London (ASL)</a>&nbsp;– one of the UK’s leading independent schools offering a US curriculum for students aged&nbsp;4-18 yrs. We spoke to Jennifer Kirstein, Director of Teaching and Learning, and Mirangela Buggs, Director of Global Citizenship to find out more about the five crucial real-life skills children need for a global future and what parents should really be looking for in their child&#8217;s education.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-1-cultural-intelligence-amp-empathy">1. Cultural intelligence &amp; empathy</h3>



<p>If global citizenship is the big-picture ambition, then cultural intelligence and empathy are the everyday skills that bring it to life in the classroom. Increasingly, ASL recognises that academic success isn’t separate from emotional and cultural awareness, it’s deeply connected to it. Using the idea of the cultural iceberg, students are encouraged to look beyond visible aspects of culture and explore the deeper values, histories, and identities that shape how people see the world. This approach is woven through humanities, social studies, English, science, and interdisciplinary learning, where discussions of migration, sustainability, identity, and global challenges are treated as rigorous academic inquiry. At the same time, strong pastoral care and advisory systems ensure students feel known and valued, recognising that a genuine sense of belonging directly strengthens engagement and achievement.</p>



<p>Cultural understanding too, is embedded across school life rather than confined merely to celebrations. Assemblies and classroom learning connect cultural holidays to deeper historical context and, in the UK, to conversations about protected characteristics, equality, and discrimination. Student leadership initiatives, such as the peer leadership programme create space for open dialogue about identity, accents, and belonging &#8211; particularly what it means to be an American or non-American within the school. From curriculum design to assemblies, and student-led initiatives, across all grades, the building of cultural intelligence isn’t treated as an add-on but as an essential thread running through learning.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-2-communication-across-borders">2. Communication across borders</h3>



<p>The one skill at the top of every school’s wish list? The ability to communicate across difference, not just confidently, but thoughtfully. And to do that? A deep sense of self-awareness and an understanding of how culture shapes behaviour is required. Culture is not fixed or monolithic, and many students embody this complexity themselves. Third culture kids, for example, may have parents of different nationalities, be born in one country, and raised in another, resulting in identities that are layered and fluid. Communicating well in that context requires curiosity, humility, and a willingness to seek understanding rather than default to assumption. These skills have always mattered, but in an increasingly polarised world, they have become essential.</p>



<p>ASL alumni Maya Trabulsi is a fantastic example of such student, having been born in Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War before moving to the UAE, UK, and eventually, the US, where she&#8217;s built a successful career in broadcast journalism. It&#8217;s these essential skills in intellectual discussion, deep listening, and managing emotional responses that are so crucial to her job now. At ASL, students are given real-life opportunities to practise communication within the community action programme, as well as the Grand Friends programme, where students build relationships with older adults in the community. A fantastic means of allowing students to practise dialogue, empathy, and reflection.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-3-ethical-leadership-amp-social-responsibility">3. Ethical leadership &amp; social responsibility</h3>



<p>Alongside communication and cultural fluency, another priority shaping modern education is ethical leadership. Increasingly, schools like ASL are recognising that academic success alone isn’t enough; young people also need a strong moral compass, a sense of responsibility to others, and the confidence to act on their values. At the heart of ASL is the undeterred mission to help their students simply become good people. Core values centre around respect, responsibility, kindness, integrity, and the courage to act. It&#8217;s a big reason why they are part of Harvard’s Making Caring Common initiative &#8211; aligning with their belief in cultivating caring, ethical human beings. </p>



<p>Service learning, too, is evolving beyond traditional charity drives or obligatory volunteering hours. It&#8217;s properly embedded into the curriculum. For example, younger students reading to older adults as part of literacy learning. In high school, students build long-term partnerships with organisations over several years, creating authentic learning and genuine connection, rather than a checklist of hours. We might not be seeing many examples of it right now, but leadership grounded in kindness and responsibility is essential for the future of our planet.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-4-adaptability-resilience-amp-global-mobility">4. Adaptability, resilience &amp; global mobility</h3>



<p>A quality that universities and employers are calling out for again and again has to be adaptability. The future is uncertain. We can’t predict careers the way we once could, and therefore adaptability, creativity, and flexibility allow students to respond to changing industries and technologies, including AI. In order to build that resilience that helps children become comfortable with change, experiential learning is key. From residential trips to outdoor education and international experiences, students learn by navigating real situations where things don’t always go to plan, such as ASL&#8217;s ecology programme in South Africa which places students in challenging, tech-free environments.</p>



<p>Elliot Ackerman is another former ASL student who is proof in the pudding that these skills make a real-world difference. Elliot served for years as a US Marine, later working at the CIA and in the Obama White House, before turning to writing. Now a bestselling novelist, he draws on his experience to explore through fiction what it truly means to fight wars alongside allies from different countries and cultures, and the complex bonds that form in those shared, high-stakes moments. Adaptability, resilience, and global mobility &#8211; it&#8217;s all right there.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-5-independent-thinking-in-a-global-context">5. Independent thinking in a global context</h3>



<p>In a world where opinions travel faster than facts, the ability to think independently while still respecting the views of others has become a defining skill. This is central to the ASL mission. Students are given safe, structured spaces to develop their own voice while learning to listen with respect and intellectual humility. This is where progressive education plays a vital role, encouraging dialogue, multiple perspectives, and rigorous critical thinking. In social studies, for example, historical events are examined through a range of lenses, including those of marginalised groups, inviting students to engage with complexity, ambiguity, and nuance rather than simply memorising information. That process of grappling with competing viewpoints is where genuine critical thinking takes root.</p>



<p>At the same time, the school is mindful of developmental readiness. Complex global issues such as climate change are approached with care to avoid anxiety or overwhelm, balancing honest discussion with a focus on agency. Students are encouraged to consider what they can control and how they can contribute meaningfully. Initiatives such as the Human Rights Symposium provide opportunities for in-depth research and peer education, reinforcing the message that young people are not passive observers of global challenges but capable participants in shaping solutions.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-so-what-should-parents-look-for">So, what should parents look for?</h3>



<p>When evaluating a school’s approach to global education, parents should look beyond headline results to the breadth of the curriculum, the richness of co-curricular opportunities, and the quality of experiential learning on offer, as well as the extent to which student voice is genuinely valued. A culture where students are empowered to create conferences, launch clubs, and lead their own initiatives signals something deeper than surface-level engagement. It reflects a school environment that prioritises agency, authenticity, and meaningful learning, giving young people real ownership of their ideas and the confidence to turn them into action.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-does-the-future-look-like-for-the-next-generation">What does the future look like for the next generation?</h3>



<p>Increasingly, it’s less about a picture-perfect CV and more about emotional intelligence, ethical decision-making, and the ability to navigate complexity with confidence and care. Increasingly, global success will be defined not simply by achievement, but by wellbeing, ethical discernment, care for humanity, and responsible decision-making. Even more so as emerging technologies like AI reshape how we live and work. True success will mean aligning innovation with values that protect and strengthen people, communities, and the planet rather than pursuing progress at any cost. </p>



<p>Above all, it&#8217;s hoped students leave school with a mindset of interconnectedness, a clear understanding of how deeply linked our systems, choices, and societies really are. And alongside that, something deceptively simple yet profoundly powerful: kindness, the steady force that underpins collaboration, leadership, and ultimately, meaningful global citizenship.</p>
