Tucked away on a quiet side street just a two-minute stroll from Olympia, St James Nursery and Preparatory School is easy to miss from the outside. Step through the gates, though, and it’s a different story — a calm, courtyard-centred school that feels pleasantly removed from the bustle around it. It’s a co-ed independent for ages 2–11, well connected but with a noticeably unhurried feel.

Small and nurturing by design (around 120 pupils in the Prep and 30 in the Nursery), St James is celebrating its 50th year and has always done things a little differently. Sanskrit, mindfulness and philosophy are part of the daily routine rather than optional extras, with The Pause — a short moment of breathing and reflection — built into every lesson. Add in a whole-school vegetarian ethos (chosen for inclusivity, not dogma) and you get a school that quietly encourages children to slow down, think and tune in. It won’t suit everyone — but for the right family, it really works.

The Prep shares its West Kensington site with St James Senior Girls’ School, while the Senior Boys’ School is in Ashford, Surrey. From 2027, both senior schools will become co-educational, creating a seamless through-school option that fits neatly with St James’ inclusive, values-led approach.

FACILITIES

The school is deceptively large and makes clever use of its space. The main building, once a tertiary college, isn’t a shiny new build — and that’s part of the charm. It feels lived-in and relaxed, the sort of place where children settle quickly.

Classrooms are light and airy with high ceilings, and pupil work is everywhere, giving it a creative, well-used feel without tipping into over-styled.

Outdoor space is used smartly too. The school backs straight onto Marcus Garvey Park, making outdoor learning and forest school easy wins. For sport, pupils head to King’s House in Chiswick, with Fulham Pools used for swimming galas.

A final social plus: The Courtyard Café, open before and after school. It takes the edge off drop-off and pick-up — the kind of place where a ‘quick coffee’ has a habit of turning into a longer chat.

SPORT

Sport is taken seriously at St James, with a busy fixture list and regular competition against other schools. Games are based at King’s House in Chiswick, giving pupils access to proper facilities and a sense that sport matters here – but without the win-at-all-costs vibe.

The programme is broad and well balanced. Pupils rotate through the usual seasonal sports — football and netball in the autumn, football and rugby in winter, then athletics and cricket in the summer — alongside gym-based activities back at school, including netball, dodgeball, handball and gymnastics. There’s enough variety that even the less sporty tend to find something they enjoy.

Swimming features too, with an annual gala at Fulham Pools and an end-of-year House event. Pupils also compete in Independent Schools Association national cross country, and regularly qualify for ISA National competitions across a number of sports – giving the school a competitive edge without it ever feeling OTT.

ARTS

If creativity matters to you, St James has plenty going on – and it’s woven into everyday school life rather than saved for special occasions. Art is taken seriously, with pupils’ work everywhere you look and a broad range of techniques on offer – from painting and sculpture to sewing and printmaking – and it shows: pieces regularly make it through to the ISA finals. The art teacher is both an artist and an architect, and weekly art lessons are complemented by longer project sessions, and there’s even a regular art class for parents in The Courtyard Café — a very St James touch.

The performing arts are equally strong. I visited on Nativity Day and was treated to a traditional production complete with donkeys, angels and wise men, staged in the school’s theatre with proper lighting and staging. It felt inclusive and celebratory rather than over-polished.

Music is similarly woven into school life. At the Friday commendation assembly, pupils regularly stand up to perform — piano, violin and singing all featured during my visit. Every child has music lessons with a specialist teacher, covering notation, composition and digital music-making, including GarageBand. There’s a large choir, smaller instrumental groups, and for particularly able musicians, opportunities to join the Senior Girls’ orchestra next door.

Creativity here isn’t limited to the arts, either. Cookery plays a surprisingly big role too. Every Friday, Chef Allegra — yes, the founder of LEON — teaches children seasonal, vegetarian cooking. From the age of four, pupils use real knives and hobs, building confidence and practical skills along the way.

ACADEMICS

Learning by heart at St James Prep School Kensington

Despite its calm, mindful atmosphere, St James is a properly academic prep. From the early years, children are stretched and supported across the core subjects, but without the pressure cooker feel. There’s also a real focus on handwriting — the exercise books I saw were beautifully presented.

One of the school’s real calling cards is its long-standing tradition of learning by heart. Sanskrit is introduced from the age of two, with Shakespeare and poetry added as pupils move up the school. This isn’t about exam drilling, but about training memory, confidence and clarity of thought – what the school calls “food for the mind”. Even the youngest pupils recite aloud with impressive assurance.

Academic, sporting and creative arts scholarships are awarded within the prep itself, each with a financial award attached — a very St James way of recognising talent in all its forms, not just the academic high-fliers.

Pupils move on to a good spread of London senior schools, including Emanuel School, Latymer Upper School, Godolphin and Latymer School, Notting Hill & Ealing High School, Francis Holland School, Putney High School, Kew House School and the St James Senior Schools. Several pupils each year hold more than one offer (many with scholarships), across academic, creative and sporting routes.

SEND

Support here isn’t a tick-box exercise – it’s genuinely personal. The SENCo brings over ten years’ expertise to the role and works on site three days a week, supporting pupils with a range of needs, including those with Education, Health and Care Plans. Support typically starts with careful observation and teacher intervention, followed by a tailored plan where needed, which is reviewed and adjusted over time.

The small class sizes help here. Children seem to be known well, which makes it easier to spot when someone needs a bit more support or reassurance. Wellbeing is clearly taken seriously too — something that’s been formally recognised with a Wellbeing Award — but it doesn’t feel bolted on. It’s just part of how the school runs day to day.

THE HEAD

Hilary Wyatt arrived at St James’ Prep three years ago, having previously led at Lyceum and Eaton Square (part of Dukes Education). With daughters who attended the Senior School, she knows the St James community inside out – and it shows.

She is everywhere, in the best possible way – on the gate each morning, greeting children and parents by name in the corridors, stopping to chat. In assemblies she celebrates pupils’ achievements warmly and without formality. It feels natural rather than performative, and the children seem completely at ease with her.

An experienced school inspector, Hilary has a sharp sense of what works, but it’s the way she applies it that stands out. Initiatives like the weekly “I wish my teacher knew” notes give staff insight into pupils’ lives beyond the classroom, while her open-door policy makes it easy for parents to stop and talk. A final, telling detail: weekly tea with small groups of pupils – where children aren’t allowed to serve themselves — a quiet lesson in kindness and putting others first. It sums her up neatly.

QUIRKS

The Pause at St James Prep School, Kensington

You’ve already clocked the Sanskrit and the daily pause, but there are a couple of other quirks worth mentioning. One is the school’s vegetarian ethos – chosen simply because it’s the most inclusive option. Not everyone is vegetarian (in fact, no one I met was), but everyone can eat the same food and no one feels singled out. It’s a small thing that says a lot about how the school thinks.

The other is it’s long-standing partnership with Under One Sky. Three times a week, the school community makes sandwiches for what the children call “their homeless friends” – sometimes it’s parents, sometimes the senior school, and on Fridays it’s the Prep. It’s done quietly, routinely and without fuss. Kindness here isn’t a poster on the wall — it’s something pupils just grow up doing.

The last report was in 2024 and the school met all the required standards with bells on.

MOBILE PHONE POLICY

Sorry, screen addicts — it’s pretty much a phone-free zone. Any mobiles brought into school are handed into the office first thing and collected at the end of the day. In EYFS, staff keep phones firmly out of sight too, so attention stays where it should: on the children, not the screen.

WRAP-AROUND CARE

Wraparound here really feels like part of the school day — not some rushed babysitting. It runs 8am–6pm, and you can use it regularly or just now and again. Afternoons are all about choice and chill: think Magic Carpet, yoga, gardening, Karate, Circus Skills and Chess alongside general play.

Parents say this is a school where children are deeply known and genuinely happy — and where families quickly feel part of a close-knit community. Pastoral care is a real strength, but academics don’t take a back seat – it’s a balance the school gets right.

MUDDY VERDICT

A kind, thoughtful school with a genuinely warm, inclusive feel, St James’ does things a little differently — and it works. Small class sizes, solid academics and a clear emphasis on mindfulness, learning by heart and kindness means pupils are known, supported properly and ready for what comes next.

Good for: Families looking for a close-knit, community-minded school with a strong moral compass and an education that feeds both head and heart. Particularly good for independent thinkers and children who might thrive better outside a big, high-octane setting.

Not for: Hardcore carnivores who can’t imagine a school day without a sausage roll, or families set on acres of on-site green space.
