<p>Tucked away on a quiet West Kensington street just a couple of minutes from Olympia,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stjamesschools.co.uk/nursery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Little Shells Nursery</a>&nbsp;sits on the same site as <a href="https://www.stjamesschools.co.uk/prepschool/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">St James Prep</a> and the <a href="https://www.stjamesschools.co.uk/seniorgirls/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Senior Girls&#8217;</a> school — and feels surprisingly calm given how central it is. It currently caters for children aged&nbsp;2–4, with plans to welcome&nbsp;babies&nbsp;soon, following demand from existing families keen to get in early.</p>



<p>Little Shells has its&nbsp;own dedicated building, with a generous outdoor space for free-flow play and a quiet room for naps. While it&#8217;s very much a nursery in its own right, it doesn’t feel tucked away or separate. Instead, it’s properly part of the wider St James family.</p>



<p>Nursery children share playtime with older pupils and join the whole school for the&nbsp;weekly Friday assembly&nbsp;— a lively mix of music, birthdays and gentle celebration. It&#8217;s a small thing but it gives even the youngest children a real sense of belonging, and makes the step up to school life feel familiar rather than daunting.</p>



<p>There’s a practical perk too:&nbsp;every Little Shells child is guaranteed a place at St James Prep as long as they can access the curriculum. More importantly, though, the transition feels easy and unforced. Children grow into the rhythms of school life at their own pace, surrounded by familiar faces &#8211; while still very much in a setting designed for little ones. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-facilities">FACILITIES</h2>

<p>Inside, the nursery rooms are light, calm and busy without tipping into sensory overload. A detail I loved:&nbsp;Rembrandt-style frames&nbsp;on the walls that children can open to display their own artwork — a small but telling nod to creativity from the get-go.  </p>



<p>Outside, there’s climbing equipment and play stations set up for easy in-and-out play, while nap time happens in a calm sleep room with little mattresses and individual sleeping bags (very civilised).</p>



<p>Staffing feels like a real strength. The team are&nbsp;highly qualified, all speak and write English fluently, and there’s a reassuring sense of consistency in how the rooms run. Children also benefit from&nbsp;specialist teachers, even at nursery level, and are gently introduced to school routines early on — including those Friday assemblies, which they reportedly sit through with impressive focus (birthdays and certificates help).</p>



<p>Music and movement play a big role in the day too. Children sing and move daily, using the&nbsp;Motor Movers&nbsp;approach — shoes off, music on, lots of freedom to join in without pressure. There’s also a strong emphasis on&nbsp;table manners: sitting properly, using cutlery and saying please and thank you, with lunch staff choosing a weekly “star” for good manners.</p>



<p>Parents are very much part of the picture, with&nbsp;regular Stay and Play sessions&nbsp;making Little Shells feel more like an extension of family life than a drop-and-dash nursery. With plans to expand to include babies, subject to Ofsted approval, growth here feels considered and demand-led — not rushed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-food-amp-nutrition">FOOD &amp; NUTRITION</h2>

<p>Little Shells is a vegetarian nursery, though it’s not about ideology &#8211; just inclusivity. Everyone eats the same food, which keeps things simple and fuss-free. Meals are cooked on site using good-quality ingredients, with plenty of thought given to balanced, nutritious food that children actually enjoy. Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack are all included, which takes the pressure off mornings (and means no lunchboxes to wrestle with). </p>

<p>There’s a surprising amount of&nbsp;creative juice&nbsp;flowing through Little Shells too. Alongside the usual making and mark-making, kids get chances to explore&nbsp;music, drama and storytelling&nbsp;in ways that feel fun &#8211; singing, movement and simple performances are all part of the week. They also benefit from access to the wider school’s spaces, like the&nbsp;teaching kitchen and art areas, which bring creative play to life and give little ones a sense of bigger possibilities early on.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-learning-amp-early-academics">LEARNING &amp; EARLY ACADEMICS</h2>

<p>Learning here is gentle, play-based and age-appropriate, but there’s a clear sense of where it&#8217;s heading. Children are gently exposed to things you might not expect at this stage — forest school in the neighbouring park, specialist music and drama, chef-led cooking sessions, and even early mindfulness through <em>The Pause</em> and Sanskrit.</p>



<p>Children move through&nbsp;<em>Little Shells</em>&nbsp;and into&nbsp;<em>Big Shells</em>&nbsp;as they get older. By around&nbsp;three and four, Big Shells children begin to dip their toes into phonics and early reading, with plenty of support and no pressure. It’s not formal schooling, but by the time Reception rolls round, the routines and language already feel familiar.</p>



<p>Being part of the wider school helps too. Nursery children join Friday assemblies and share playground time with older pupils, so school life never feels like a big leap — more a natural next step. It’s calm, confidence-building and refreshingly unhurried. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-head">HEAD</h2>

<p>Hilary Wyatt has been Head of both the Nursery and the Prep for the past three years, having previously led at Lyceum and Eaton Square (part of Dukes Education). With daughters who attended the Senior School, she knows the wider St James community inside out .</p>



<p>She’s the one on the gate every morning, welcoming children and parents by name and even the youngest children clearly know who she is. One of her decisions has been to integrate the nursery more closely into school life, including shared playground time with older pupils, which helps Little Shells feel part of something bigger without losing its nurturing feel.</p>



<p>Hilary has a clear sense of what works in schools, but what stands out here is how grounded it all feels. Communication with parents is open and easy, and there’s a strong sense that children are known as individuals from the very beginning &#8211; add to that her open-door policy and parents feel able to stop, talk and be heard.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quirks">QUIRKS</h2>



<p>You’ll quickly spot a couple of things that set Little Shells apart. One is the vegetarian ethos, in line with the wider St James approach. It’s not ideological — just practical and inclusive. Everyone eats the same food, no one’s singled out, and mealtimes stay blissfully simple.</p>



<p>The other is&nbsp;<em>The Pause</em>. Even at nursery age, children are introduced to a short, calming moment of stillness and breathing at points during the day. It’s very low-key (no forcing toddlers to meditate) but it sets a gentle rhythm and works surprisingly well as a reset button when things get a bit lively.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wrap-around-care">WRAP-AROUND CARE</h2>



<p>Little Shells runs&nbsp;48 weeks a year, which will be music to the ears of working parents. Days run from&nbsp;8.00am–6.00pm, with the option of&nbsp;early drop-off from 7.30am&nbsp;if needed. Morning and afternoon sessions are also available, so there’s some flexibility depending on how you want to structure the week. The nursery closes for short breaks over Christmas, Easter and a fortnight in the summer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fees">FEES</h2>



<p>Fees are charged monthly and breakfast, lunch, snacks, nappies and wipes are all included — no constant add-ons to factor in.</p>



<p>As a rough guide, the&nbsp;minimum five sessions a week&nbsp;comes in at&nbsp;£263 per week&nbsp;(around&nbsp;£1,050 per month / £12,600 per year). Three full days cost&nbsp;£315 per week, four full days&nbsp;£420, and five full days&nbsp;£525 per week.</p>



<p>Eligible families can use&nbsp;15 or 30 hours of government funding, which the nursery spreads across 48 weeks to keep monthly payments even. Extra sessions can be added if needed (at&nbsp;£60 per session), and early wrap-around from 7.30am is available for&nbsp;£15 a morning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-word-of-mouth">WORD OF MOUTH</h2>



<p>Parents tend to describe Little Shells as quietly brilliant. It&#8217;s a nursery that eases children to the rhythms of school life without rushing them. Children pick up routines, boundaries and confidence along the way while still being given space to be themselves &#8211; just a little more independent, kind and self-assured.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-muddy-verdict">MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p>A calm, nurturing nursery with a strong sense of belonging, Little Shells feels thoughtfully run and quietly confident in what it offers. With its gentle focus on wellbeing, a seamless connection to the wider St James school community and plenty of practical touches for parents, it’s a reassuring start to school life.</p>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong>&nbsp;Working parents who need reliable wraparound care, but don’t want to compromise on a calm, nurturing environment. Particularly appealing if you like the idea of your child being part of a wider school community from an early age.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong>&nbsp;Those after a big, buzzy standalone nursery with acres of outdoor space — or those allergic to vegetarian food and moments of calm.</p>
