WHAT? WHERE?

Nestled in a leafy corner of south west London just minutes from the Thames and twixt the independent school hotspots of Richmond and Twickenham, Hampton Pre-Prep & Prep School is an academically selective, non-denominational day school for children aged 3 to 11 yrs. Girls and boys start together in the Pre-Prep, but from Y3 it’s boys only – and these boys are heading places (mainly, across the road to Hampton School).

The school spans two compact, smartly maintained sites covering three acres in total – a two-acre purpose-built Prep (rebuilt in 2016) and a freshly revamped Pre-Prep nearby, with both sites benefiting from the backing of the heavyweight Hampton Trust.

Pupil numbers sit at 232 (223 boys, 9 girls), with class sizes of 22 in the Pre-Prep and 18 in the Prep, although the school has recently been granted permission to raise Prep class sizes to a maximum of 22 – still small enough for plenty of individual attention, but big enough to boost camaraderie, healthy competition and a more dynamic classroom buzz. It has a rock-solid local reputation, boasting a warm community vibe, academic firepower and a genuinely nurturing ethos.

Don’t be fooled by the sleek modern buildings – Hampton Prep’s roots stretch back to 1924, when a quietly rebellious Mr James set up a school in his front room to educate his left-handed sons, rather than see them punished for not conforming. A gentle, pragmatic trailblazer, his spirit of doing things differently for the right reasons still runs through the school today. In his honour, the multi-purpose James Hall bears the family name – and for the centenary ribbon-cutting, two of Mr James’s daughters, now in their 80s, returned to do the honours.

FACILITIES

SPORT

Small but mighty is the vibe here. The boys play on three outdoor surfaces: an artificial pitch, grass on site and matches across the hedge in Carlisle Park. It’s no-frills on the face of it, but the results tell a different story: 75% of all Rugby, Football and Cricket matches went unbeaten in 2024, and the school’s got Fulham and QPR Academy boys, three county cricketers, a national diving finalist and a tennis champ currently ranked 9th in the UK.

The Head of Sport has shifted the dial to focus on the values and virtues of sport at Hampton. The children are taught about the mental and physical benefits, celebrating wins and losing gracefully and having a go. For a small it punches above its weight and has a shiny, full trophy cabinet to prove it.

CREATIVE ARTS (MUSIC, DRAMA, ART, DT)

Music is huge. Roughly 75% – 80% of boys play at least one instrument, a third play two, and the whole school takes part in over 10 concerts a year. Choirs, ukulele, drum circle – it’s all happening – and the Centenary Proms Concert was a joyous whoop of community spirit. Drama thrives too: five major productions a year plus 70 Y3-Y6 pupils taking LAMDA (distinction rates are through the roof thanks to a popular drama teacher – no, we’re not naming her, hands off). The new art room in the Prep is light, bright and busy, with a lovely win in the Richmond Mayor’s Christmas card competition.

SCHOOL

The Prep building is modern and purpose-built – a no-nonsense layout, nicely kitted out, with each year group of 36-38 split into two forms. Class sizes are capped at 22 (though 18 is more typical), and following a recent planning victory, that number may gently rise. The James Hall is the beating heart of the Prep site, hosting everything from daily assemblies (three per week!) to performances and Friday Celebrations. Upstairs, there’s a cosy rooftop breakout zone, cleverly added in the school’s centenary spruce-up.

LITTLIES

The Pre-Prep (ages 3–7 yrs) sits just a short scoot away and has had the full architectural refresh recently. There’s now a swanky new school hall, brand-new Reception classroom and a refreshed Kindergarten space that all open out onto the playground. Although it’s co-ed, most children are boys, but the handful of girls were unfazed. That dynamic won’t suit all families, but at this age, it doesn’t tend to be an issue. It’s hyper-local and gentle, and Y2 girls seem perfectly happy leading their own mini matriarchies (Leilani, we see you).

It’s a buzzy part of the school, lots of topic-based, free-flow learning in kindergarten – worms were being investigated with great enthusiasm. There was a conga line of Y1s coming down the stairs to hop on the bus to go swimming and elsewhere lessons were fun and engaging.

Crucially, the relationship between the Pre-Prep and Prep is warm and well-managed. There’s a structured transition for Y2s, including lunches, taster lessons and PE at the Prep site, and senior staff make regular visits over to read stories and keep those cross-site bonds alive. Imogen Murphy, the Pre-Prep Head currently on leave, sounds like a ray of sunshine and much loved.

ACADEMICS

Don’t be fooled by the understated vibe – this is a sharp academic outfit. The curriculum is bespoke and broad (Philosophy and Engineering sit happily alongside English and Maths), and the pace is zippy. Boys get 80 mins a day of English and Maths from Y3 upwards, and there’s gentle setting from Y4, with more formalised groups for English and Maths in Y5 and Y6.

From Y5 the boys use Chromebooks in lessons to support their learning and the team are considering introducing one-to-one devices for Y3 and Y4. Blended learning is increasingly important when educating digital natives – laptops and tablets are used as an additional resource but not at the expense of reading and writing. There’s a lot of talk in schools about AI. While staff are keep tabs on developments, Hampton is keeping its powder dry before introducing anything here. It’s a sensible approach.

There’s a clear ambition to stretch every boy academically – but without tipping into hot-housing. And it’s paying off: in 2024/25, 16 scholarships were awarded across academics, sport, art and drama, and boys have scooped 13+ offers from top-tier schools including Eton and Winchester. Most go on to Hampton School, thanks to a well-honed internal assessment process that offers ‘assured places’ as early as Y2, provided boys are keeping pace with the school’s brisk academic tempo. Word is spreading – applications to the Prep are soaring and the catchment is expanding fast, with families now coming in from Chiswick, Ealing, Ashford and Surrey.

SEND

Learning support is proactive and woven into daily school life – a modern approach that fosters a more inclusive and effective and engaging learning environment. Support may be in-class, a small group or one-to-one depending on the need. The specialist SEND department works closely with parents and teachers to ensure every child is seen and supported. The school isn’t specialist but is thoughtful in its provision and communication.

Only a handful of children have been identified as needing SEND support, like dyslexia, but no pupils have an EHC plan. The most able children are identified and enjoy an adapted to curriculum to give them the necessary stretch. It’s all very inclusive and low key – so no one feels like they are being singled out.

PASTORAL CARE

Warmth is the school’s calling card and it’s not just a buzzword – it’s baked into daily life. Assemblies focus on gratitude, reflection and joy. The bespoke Life Skills programme incorporates mindfulness, neuroscience and dedicated wellbeing sessions. Pastoral care sits with form tutors (Prep) and class teachers (Pre-Prep), but all staff are trained and trusted to be a port of call.

The House system, with its regular events, competitions and sense of belonging, adds an extra layer of support and camaraderie, giving pupils another space to feel seen, heard and part of the wider school community. There’s a school counsellor and close collaboration with Hampton School to support emotional growth and resilience.

THE HEAD

Tim Smith has been in the hot seat for a decade, arriving from The Hall in Hampstead. He’s a thoughtful, candid, lightly rebellious leader who’s refreshingly un-PR’d. Under his watch, the school has rebranded, rebuilt and repositioned itself as a modern, nurturing, academically ambitious Prep. He describes the school as “boutique, not bougie” – and we’re inclined to agree.

He’s proud of the links with the historic Hampton School, but is keen to stress it’s not a ‘feeder’ Prep. Smith has aligned the Prep’s values and vision with the Senior school, but admission is not a given and the boys have to work just as hard as external candidates to secure one of the coveted Y7 spots. That said, Smith and the team know the Hampton School drill so they prep those kids to have the very best chance. He has good knowledge of the key Senior School destinations and advises the boys and their parents of their options as early as possible.

Tim Smith is a lovely man – kind, caring and very down to earth. All the attributes you want from a Prep head.

QUIRKS

Assemblies are themed (this term’s was “Bright Days”, because why not?) and three a week, which is unusually frequent. The Warhammer Club started by a group of Y6s is also a lovely touch. Plus, not many schools can say one of their Year 4s is a nationally ranked tennis player.

And don’t forget the centenary connection – the original school began in 1924 in a living room with two left-handed sons, taught by Mr James himself who objected to caning them for not writing right-handed. That pragmatic rebel spirit lives on.

WRAP AROUND CARE

Early drop from 7.45am (Prep) and 8am (Pre-Prep); late stay with after school clubs and supervised prep until 5.30pm. Options are being reviewed for next year with a view to extending. There’s a smorgasbord of fun clubs to choose from, from cookery and creative writing to yoga and comic books.

MOBILE PHONE POLICY

Phone-free in school. Boys travelling by bus can hand theirs in on arrival. Computing is well integrated across the curriculum but digital literacy is taught with care and age-appropriateness. No social media, obviously – they’re 11 and under.

TRANSPORT

There’s a broad school coach network for Prep boys from Y3, reaching well beyond the 30 min local catchment bubble. Minibuses used for matches, trips and the all-important match tea excursions.

FEES

For 2025/26: Kindergarten from £2,775 per term; Pre-Prep (Reception–Y2) is £6,510 and Prep (Y3–Y6) is £7,200 per term. With wraparound, specialist teaching and enrichment galore, this feels like strong value versus local competitors.

WORD ON THE GROUND

Parents love the openness and clarity here. The academic ambition is high, especially with so many heading to Hampton, but there’s no sense of hot-housing. “Not fuddy-duddy”, as one parent put it. The atmosphere is calm, respectful and warm – and the relationship with Hampton School, while nuanced, offers real advantage without pressure.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

GOOD FOR: Bright, curious boys who thrive in a warm, structured environment and families looking for a calm but ambitious alternative to high-octane London preps.

NOT FOR: Parents seeking full co-ed beyond Y2 or a more traditionally old-school prep with Latin and blazers galore.
