<p>The senior branch of UCS (as it&#8217;s more commonly known) dominates Frognal on a 20-acre site in leafy Hampstead, around a five-minute walk from the High Street, tube station and Heath. Set in a grand, Grade II-listed red brick Edwardian building that&#8217;s flanked by more recent extensions, it accommodates around 650 boys aged 11-16 plus a 350-pupil co-ed Sixth Form. </p>



<p>Founded in 1830 as part of University College London and relocated to Hampstead in 1907, it&#8217;s very much a liberal school that encourages individuality at all ages &#8211; close by are USC Junior and Pre-Prep schools if you&#8217;re looking for a learning journey under one umbrella. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-facilities">FACILITIES</h2>

<p>One of the first things that stood out during my tour of UCS is that the interior is surprisingly modern and relaxed compared to the more traditional, grandiose exterior of the main school building. That said, the 800-seater Great Hall at the heart of the school with its inner balconies, wood panels and giant organ certainly looks the part for any pupils hoping for a Harry Potter-style school experience. </p>



<p>A standout facility is the impressive two-storey, state-of-the-art library, which pupils had a hand in designing and feels modern and welcoming, complete with study areas, quiet room and plentiful work desks. </p>



<p>The fact classrooms are so light-filled and spacious is notable, and facilities are exceptional throughout, from the 13 pristine science labs to the Sir Roger Bannister Sports Centre and UCS Active, which is about as far removed from a traditional school sports hub as it&#8217;s possible to be. </p>



<p>Forget childhood memories of smelly lockers and freezing cold changing rooms, this place resembles a swish members&#8217; gym, which is pretty much what it is as the wider community also has access; think spotless 25m swimming pool, airy studios and a knock-out gym filled with high tech equipment including Life Fitness treadmills, the first school in the country to install them. Little wonder this place is such a hit with pupils and the local community. It&#8217;s also a real earner for the school, helping to fund some of the 60-plus bursaries awarded each year. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-arts">THE ARTS</h2>

<p>There’s creativity at every turn in UCS. A tour of the Design &amp; Technology studios was really rather wow, I spied model railways, 3D printers, lathes, drills and lots of big, bold projects including ergonomic chairs &#8211; one curved seat had been cushioned with halved tennis balls and looked like something from a photo shoot (I&#8217;m sure Andy Murray would happily snap it up). </p>



<p>Music&#8217;s first rate and I can&#8217;t think of a better opportunity for progression than attending the purpose built Music School, with its five classrooms and 12 practice rooms for one-to-one sessions plus two ICT suites and a 200-seater recital hall. Anyone who wants to take things further than the classroom can can join some of the 30+ bands (from jazz, rock and pop to a symphony orchestra and 50-piece concert band) and multiple choirs, which perform everywhere from small lunch time recitals to full-on events like the annual carol concert. </p>



<p>Art exams were in progress during my visit so I wasn&#8217;t able to access all areas, but it&#8217;s safe to say the spaces I did see were suitably impressive and art throughout the school is clearly of a very high standard. </p>



<p>The fact UCS has a full-time Theatre Manager is an indication of how seriously drama&#8217;s taken at the school. It&#8217;s an uplifting, confidence-building part of UCS life with multiple chances to take part in plays and musicals, hence it attracts budding young actors from across the city. Its two-hundred seater The Lund Theatre would be the envy of many schools, however it&#8217;s not just for pupils who want to tread the boards, from all-school productions through to year plays and Trinity exams, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved behind the scenes including lighting and costume design. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sports">SPORTS</h2>



<p>A cabinet of glittering trophies draws the eye at the entrance of the sports centre, unsurprising for a school boasting 27 acres of playing fields and all-weather surfaces. Pupils have two games sessions a week (Year 7s have an additional fitness-based sesh like swimming or gym) covering the usual seasonal sports: rugby, football, netball and hockey in the winter, cricket and tennis in the summer. </p>



<p>Older pupils have the chance to try a wider variety of activities, including basketball, cross country, volleyball, squash and some really interesting alternative exercise choices like yoga, bouldering, fives and spinning. Apparently the school regularly wipes the board at national level in ping-pong and my tour guide, Max (Year 10), told me the rugby team is currently excelling and tipped for great things this winter, so watch this space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-academics">ACADEMICS</h2>

<p>UCS is an intriguing blend of traditional academics and thoroughly modern learning. Pupils are certainly pushed, but not hot-housed &#8211; teachers get to know them individually and use a model of mutual respect learning, where pupils are encouraged to voice ideas and discuss them rather than simply be talked at from the front of a classroom, alongside an innovative Academic Enrichment Programme to get the absolute best from everyone. </p>



<p>The results speak for themselves, with pupils heading off to top universities around the country. More than 22 subjects are offered at GCSE and A-Level, from Latin and Mandarin to PE and results last year soared way above the national average: 80% of GCSE grades were either 8s or 9s, while 93% were 9–7. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sixth-form">SIXTH FORM</h2>

<p>There’s a big shift when pupils reach UCS Sixth Form, from the environment (modern, purpose-built, perfect for teens), to the non-uniform policy and introduction of girls at 16. </p>



<p>The vast majority of pupils stay on and no wonder, as the Sixth Form looks like a fun place to learn and hangout, with its round white tables, views over the school grounds, neon signs and buzzy café. Co-ed&#8217;s a big change for boys, but when I dipped in there were mixed groups happily chilling together. Apparently Sixth Form girls were asked to advise on PSHE lessons for younger pupils to help inform them about expected their behaviour and attitude before they hit the co-ed Sixth Form &#8211; an astute, clever move more schools should adopt. </p>



<p>I got the impression sixth formers get a lot of freedom and plenty of perks, from use of the fantastic gym in the adjacent UCS Active building to ditching the school&#8217;s red and black striped blazers and wearing their own fashionably baggy clothes. It struck me as the ideal transition from school to Uni, including the teaching style &#8211; teens at UCS aren&#8217;t spoon fed, it’s very much about independent thinking and the results are remarkable: 93% of A-Level grades last year were A*–B, and 84% of pupils secured places at their first or second choice university, including 21 leavers heading off to Oxford or Cambridge. </p>

<p>Mark Beard joined the school from Brighton College, where he was deputy head. Having graduated in Chemistry from Oxford, he soon pursued a path into education via teaching chemistry at St Paul&#8217;s, and it’s clearly his passion. Not one to sit on his laurels, he’s always moving things forward and, as the school approaches its two-hundred-year anniversary in 2030, there&#8217;s plenty of developments in the pipeline including a new wellbeing hub. </p>



<p>We catch up in his fabulous office (think wood panels, parquet flooring, antique desk) and he comes across as warm, progressive and keen to equip pupils with skills that will stand them in good stead in the real world, not just the rarified bubble of Hampstead. I particularly liked his refreshingly positive take on AI, which he thinks will make human problem-solvers more in demand rather than less. He’s also a champion of inclusivity and sustainability &#8211; UCS was the first school in the UK to achieve triple-gold recognition across all categories of the UN’s Climate Neutral Now initiative. Two big ticks if you&#8217;re looking for an open-minded, forward-thinking head. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quirks">QUIRKS</h2>

<p>Plenty. This is the first school Muddy’s visited which has a Crochet Club, and it’s popular, gifting more than 100 handmade items to the Royal Free Hospital. It&#8217;s also the first school Muddy&#8217;s visited with an on-site War Memorial or to star in a Netflix video starring Alicia Keys &#8211; the singer performed in the Great Hall in a trailer for <em>Bridgerton</em> spin off<em> Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story</em>. Finally, The school song&#8217;s pretty quirky, encouraging the boys to &#8216;lay intolerance, ignorance and tyrannies low&#8217; whilst throwing their hands up in the air at the end of all three verses and shouting ‘Paulatim’ three times</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pastoral">PASTORAL </h2>

<p>Pupils are given guidance from the get-go, with a Director of Wellbeing appointed alongside a school counsellor, school nurse and dedicated pastoral team. Younger pupils benefit from peer mentoring, and during the three-year build up to GCSE&#8217;s, boys have the same form tutor and house master, creating a base of trust and reliability from which they can thrive. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wraparound-care">WRAPAROUND CARE</h2>



<p>There’s no formal wraparound care, however with 80 fun clubs and societies on offer, it&#8217;s highly likely pupils will want to stay on long after the last bell. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mobile-phone-policy">MOBILE PHONE POLICY</h2>



<p>Lower and middle school pupils aren&#8217;t allowed to use mobile phones during the school day, with all communication handled by the school office.&nbsp;Sixth formers can use phones in the designated Sixth Form centre only.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-word-of-mouth">WORD OF MOUTH</h2>



<p>UCS is popular in Hampstead as it&#8217;s very much a part of the community rather than apart from the community, with thousands of hours of voluntary work taking place every year within local charities and schools. I was taken on a tour by two year 10 students, who were relaxed, amiable and knowledgeable. Both were extremely polite, opening doors and answering a stream of questions, had a wide variety of interests, from Latin to rugby, and appeared very grounded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fees">FEES</h2>



<p>Towards the higher end at £10,971 per term from Autumn 2025, however UCS. does provide means-tested fees assistance and awards around 60 bursaries per year. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-isi-report">ISI REPORT</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.isi.net/institutions/school/university-college-school-7201?results=true" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">latest 2024 report</a> reveals that the school attained a rarely awarded &#8220;significant strength&#8221; on the quality, breadth and delivery of the curriculum. In fact it&#8217;s all rather glowing: &#8216;They have established a school environment in which pupils are valued as individuals, know that leaders want to hear their views and ideas. Staff instil a joy of learning and give pupils the confidence to be ambitious in just how far they can develop their skill.&#8217; </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-verdict">VERDICT</h2>



<p>UCS Senior is a refreshing mix of traditional and modern learning, with a jaw-dropping breadth of curriculum that allows pupils to find and nurture their passions. You can fill your boots with the classics, such as Latin and ancient Greek, but you can also join a rock band and help grow potatoes in the allotment. Like Hampstead which surrounds it, there&#8217;s a creative, cultured, intellectual community at its core that&#8217;s really inspiring. </p>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> If you’re looking for a school that will expertly guide your child through 11+, GCSE’s and A-Levels while allowing them to also find their passions and learn important life skills, then UCS delivers in droves.</p>



<p><strong>Not for: </strong>If you’d like your child to mix with both sexes from a young age, UCS’ boys only policy until Sixth Form isn’t going to sit well.</p>
