<p>London might just be the culinary capital for meat-free food right now. It seems hard to remember the days when vegetarian restaurant <a href="https://www.mildreds.com/">Mildreds</a> in Soho was the only option for hungry veggies, because in 2025 every eatery worth its Himalayan salt has plant-based dishes as desirable as any meat and fish courses, with some restaurants ditching meat entirely. Here’s our pick of the places serving vegetarian food so good, even your chicken-loving friends will ask to join you.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Healthy-eating celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow rate The Gate, which has a flagship in Hammersmith plus two more restaurants in islington and Marylebone. Dishes look as good as they taste and are made from fresh, seasonal produce only, such as chickpea tagine, wild mushroom dauphinois and a superb aubergine schnitzel. </p>

<p>A Portobello Road favourite offering ‘vegetable-forward dining’, this place is perfect for a date night as the decor and ambiance are as sophisticated as the food. Praise be for a veggie menu that&#8217;s creative and tasty, think foraged mushrooms cassoulet, smoked tofu and chestnut, or grilled onion pumpkin, butter beans, hazelnuts and rose. Extra points for the low waste designed menu with dishes free from additives and refined sugars plus biodynamic wines. </p>

<p>In the heart of the West End lies this meat-free Mecca, a place we wish we could eat every day. Opened by chef and founder Rishim Sachdeva after he attempted the Veganuary challenge and discovered how exciting to the tastebuds plant-based meals can be, Tendril sets the veggie standard for the London restaurant scene. Order the grilled mushroom satay and crispy hispi cabbage, and the cocktails are lush too. </p>

<p>Chef Rishim Sachdeva (see above) is a busy man because he’s opened another must-visit vegetarian joint in historic Somerset House. While it’s more informal than Tendril, the small plate food’s still bursting with flavour (the golden beetroot, peppers, pomegranate and feta salad’s our favourite) and the restaurant’s sunshine yellow interior make it an uplifting place to catch a healthy bite for lunch with friends. </p>

<p>Ninety five per-cent of the menu&#8217;s vegan, and for the few dishes that do contain dairy a plant-based alternative’s offered. No ultra-processed food or meat substitutes allowed here, it’s sustainable, organic and flavoursome all the way (even the wines and drinks are biodynamic). The credentials are impeccable, you get the drift, but what about the food? As heavenly as its ethics we&#8217;re happy to report. Book the tasting menu experience and expect to dine on dishes like ceviche of açai hearts, forest floor calamari curry, Norfolk quail egg, smoked potato mousse and truffle and a trio of Amazonian fruit sorbets. </p>

<p>There’s a lotta love for this family-owned Caribbean vegan restaurant. Not only does it deliver some of the most flavoursome plant food in the capital (think jerk pepper steak, Guyanese pepper pot, plantain fries) but it’s also a vibe &#8211; there’s a cocktail bar attached, where the passionate rum punch and blue lagoon (Curacao, coconut syrup, lime juice and pineapple juice) are as moreish as the food. </p>

<p>Rooted in nature, crafted with care is the tagline of this innovative team which doesn’t actually have a restaurant (yet, watch this space), but has residencies and supper clubs across the capital where it serves up some of the most innovative veggie cuisine around. Its next Supper Club’s taking place at Fortnum &amp; Mason on Piccadilly on <strong>21 Jan</strong>, and tickets are £60, which includes a drink on arrival and three-course nourishing meal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It started out as a pop-up, but punters loved the Middle Eastern veggie small plates so much, there are now two permanent restaurants. What to expect? Sharing dishes that you’ll end up repeat ordering because they’re so dam delicious, like beetroot, black garlic tahini and sesame, parsnip, whipped ricotta and chilli honey and halloumi and chamomile. Finger-licking good.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vegetarians craving comfort food should make a beeline for this buzzy plant-based restaurant which is vegan all the way for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Chow down guilt-free on open burritos, beetroot wellington, truffle burgers and (oat) creamy mushroom pasta. We salute their motto: ‘we run with wolves and eat with the lambs’.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Named after ‘a native British miracle plant’, Mallow’s 100 per cent plant-based and brought to you from the team behind London’s original veggie restaurant Mildred’s. Using produce fresh from Borough Market, the menu reads like something from an LA eaterie, think fennel citrus salad and root chop croquettes with lime pickle mayonnaise. Just looking at it makes us feel healthier.&nbsp;</p>
