<p>Richmond Hill Hotel sits atop London’s greenest borough, breathing in the fresh air and looking out over a jaw-droppingly pretty stretch of the river Thames. You’re only 15 minutes away from Waterloo on the train, or 25 minutes into Victoria on the tube (District line) so London is enticingly close. Also, a million miles away! I took a left from the hotel and one minute later was walking in 2500 acres of Richmond Park, watching the famous deer take an early morning dip in the lake.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>Refined and friendly. The 18<sup>th</sup> century brick frontage impresses and there are plenty of set piece flourishes like the marble fireplaces, sash windows, high ceilings and a grand wooden staircase. Corridors feel a bit more conferency (there are 12 event spaces here) but mostly it feels like a welcoming, slickly-run offering.</p>

<p>There’s a lounge, bar and restaurant area called 144 On the Hill, with a smart terrace and a drinks menu offering 100+ gins. The lounge area is particularly chic, with clever lighting and a clandestine, grown-up feel. </p>

<p>I had a G&amp;T on the terrace to kick things off with music playing in the background and sun on my face &#8211; felt good! &#8211; and then moved inside for dinner.</p>

<p> The restaurant is split into two halves, a mixture of stand alone marble-style tables and banquette seating with statement feather lampshades that I can take or leave but you may love! At 8pm on a Sunday night there was a decent buzz with a loved up couple, a party of eight in their twenties, and a couple of older tourists on the other side of the divide &#8211; I&#8217;m guessing with the various afternoon teas, á la carte menus and Sunday roasts that the restaurant is used to some heavy lifting.</p>

<p>I wasn&#8217;t massively hungry so I went straight for mains &#8211; an excellent whole sea bass with lime and caper brown butter (£28), garlic potatoes with crème fraiche and leafy salad, I&#8217;d recommend it in a flash. There wine-by-the-glass option was fairly small (one champagne for example) but sometimes I prefer that; less indecision. I choose a fresh, crisp Kleine Zalze Chenin Blanc (£11) from South Africa that complemented the fish perfectly. Then it was an espresso and lights out for me.</p>

<p>By morning I was feeling peckish, and I can tell you that breakfast is well worth taking your time over, offering everything from bircher muesli and pastries, cold meats and smoked salmon and full English. Coffee and tea is included although they charge for non-basic coffees &#8211; I&#8217;m not sure a flat white classifies as that, but just letting you know!</p>



<p>Afternoon teas, Sunday roasts, á la carte and even a kids&#8217; afternoon tea and special children’s menus are all on the go in the restaurant so it&#8217;s pretty buzzy. </p>

<p>The biggest hotel in the local area, Richmond Hill boasts 144 bedrooms&nbsp;and 12 event spaces including a large ballroom for weddings. 60 of those bedrooms can accomodate a 2 adults +1 extra child (on a sofa or z-bed, an extra £20) and there are also nine interconnecting rooms. I stayed in a Georgian Deluxe Double (prices from £150 per room) and it was generous at 25.2 metres, with comfy Heal&#8217;s bed, and a lovely large bathroom with roll top bath, walk-in shower and elegant statement tiling. Tones were neutral and soothing; it was a relaxing space to unwind. Nice touch on leaving some Elemis bed spray too.</p>

<p>If you prefer your rooms contemporary there&#8217;s the Hill collection of rooms in the modern side of the hotel &#8211; I&#8217;m firmly in the Georgian camp but this one&#8217;s just down to personal taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility">ACCESSIBILITY</h2>



<p>There&#8217;s one accessible room with a wet room on the ground floor, plus ramps and lifts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dog-friendly">DOG-FRIENDLY?</h2>



<p>Definitely. Dogs can stay in all bedrooms with bowl, blanket and treats for £35. The restaurant is out of bounds but otherwise the bar and lounge are well-behaved woofer-friendly.</p>

<p>There’s plenty to see and do locally, and central London is also easily to get to by train. Richmond itself has a lovely high street with a good choice of independent boutiques, including Muddy Award-winning women’s shop, Feather &amp; Stitch, plus the usual high street brands. Richmond Park and Kew Gardens are nearby, as well as the 17<sup>th</sup>&nbsp;century National Trust venue Ham House and Gardens.Twickenham Stadium is 25 minutes away by bus for rugby fans, and the Thames is a lovely spot for a riverside stroll or a drink overlooking the water. If you’re a Ted Lasso Fan (who isn’t!), head down to Ted’s favourite drinking hole – The Crown &amp; Anchor on Richmond Green, known IRL as The Prince’s Head. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-damage">THE DAMAGE</h2>



<p>To mark its 150th year, you can stay in a double from £150 &#8211;  pretty stupendous value for London and if you book direct you also get free parking, which is worth £25 per night in its own right. Until 31 August there&#8217;s a fab deal of £229 for two people, that includes double room, breakfast for both guests, dinner (£35 allocation per guest), free parking for the duration, and two classic cocktails. If you sign up to the private offers on the booking page you get an extra 10% off too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for: </strong>Anyone wanting to experience London without the headache. You&#8217;re close enough to be in the smoke in 15 minutes, but minutes away from greenery and beauty. I&#8217;d say it&#8217;s particularly lovely for kids, with all the parks, boat trips and gardens on the doorstep.</p>



<p><strong>Not for: </strong>If cutting edge interiors are front and centre in your list of requirements, you might be better off paying an extra £300 in central London. Those with toddlers may struggle with the lack of outdoor space at the hotel itself.</p>
