<p>Stylish, witty and able to whip your wardrobe into shape in less than a day, personal stylist <a href="https://www.mariannadavisstyling.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marianna Davis</a> is the woman we all need on speed dial. Helping Londoners get their fashion mojo back is her raison d&#8217;etre and, with London Fashion Week strutting into town and the seasonal shift occurring, we thought now was the ideal time to sit down over a matcha and tap her up for tips. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-exactly-is-a-personal-stylist"><strong>What exactly is a personal stylist?</strong></h2>

<p>There is a common misconception that a personal stylist is an uber fashionista wearing the latest trends from the catwalk before they’ve hit the shops. This is absolutely not the case. Styling isn&#8217;t about fashion. Yes, there is often shopping involved but for the most part, the job of a personal stylist is to help clients feel &#8211; and look &#8211; as good as possible by highlighting their own colour palette, shape and style. It’s about getting creative with our wardrobes to create various outfits from just a few items of clothing in different ways. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-are-more-of-us-using-them-than-ever-nbsp"><strong>Why are more of us using them than ever?&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Put simply, because life is busy and the choice is overwhelming. More and more, I see people wanting to spend their time and money wisely. Investing in a personal stylist frees up time and space in day-to-day life as clients feel confident they have created a wardrobe of good quality clothes that reflect their individual style.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-you-tell-us-a-little-more-about-the-job-and-services-you-offer-nbsp"><strong>Can you tell us a little more about the job and services you offer?&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>It’s very varied, which I love. I offer an in-depth colour consultation which assesses the client’s skin tone, eye and hair colour to create what we call the client’s ‘season’ &#8211; a palette of colours is then determined and will act as the go-to reference point for any future shopping &#8211; it’s also hugely beneficial when choosing make up. It’s a real gamechanger and the favourite part of my job! I’ve started offering group sessions for hen parties, corporate team building days and birthdays and they’re always a great success. I also offer a shape analysis, working with clients on the areas of their body they like to celebrate and also what helps to flatter. </p>

<p>These sessions can be invaluable for women who have gone through changes such as birth and menopause. Once these two elements are determined, shopping takes half the time! I offer wardrobe edits (usually after a colour and shape analysis) which acts as a total cleanse of things we never wear and frees up space for things we should wear. Lastly, I offer Personal Shopping which does what it says on the tin, really. Once I’ve worked with a client and got to know their concerns and their desires, we will shop together to start growing their own personal style. I also have repeat clients who may have a week of client meetings, gala dinners and presentations so I’ll be tasked with creating a suitcase rather than a wardrobe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-the-key-thing-your-clients-are-looking-for-nbsp"><strong>What&#8217;s the key thing your clients are looking for?&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Streamlined capsule wardrobes which allow them to get up and go, knowing they will look ‘together’ no matter how long they’ve got to get ready in the morning. It’s a huge time saver. They want to know what colours suit them, what shapes suit them and how to put existing items in their wardrobe together to create multiple outfits. Personal Styling isn’t about spending lots of money on throwaway fashion; it’s about getting creative with what we have and working with our best assets. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-the-most-common-mistake-most-of-us-make-when-it-comes-to-our-every-day-wardrobes"><strong>What&#8217;s the most common mistake most of us make when it comes to our every day wardrobes? </strong></h2>

<p>Too much black! It is so draining for many skin tones and does us no favours at all.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-is-your-background-in-fashion-nbsp"><strong>Is your background in fashion?&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>My background, actually, is in communications but I’ve been drawn to clothes and dressing up since I was a little girl. A trial four-day week in my old job gave me the opportunity to take the plunge and study for my Diploma in Personal Styling at London College of Fashion. There was no looking back after that.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-you-give-us-a-couple-of-your-favourite-style-tips"><strong>Can you give us a couple of your favourite style tips</strong>?</h2>



<p>Do invest in timeless neutrals made from natural fabrics eg linen shirts, cashmere jumpers. They will last a lifetime (if the moths don’t get to them first!). Don’t invest in ‘trending’ items – they will sit at the back of your wardrobe gathering dust after just a few weeks.</p>



<p>It may sound dull but I’m a big fan of jeans – they’re so versatile and can be dressed up or down. Investing in a good pair of jeans is key &#8211; the difference a good cut can make is invaluable and that pair of jeans will see you through many, many seasons, day and night. Don’t forget about accessories to create your own look.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-marianna-s-autumn-winter-2025-style-tips">Marianna&#8217;s <strong>Autumn/Winter 2025 style tips: </strong></h2>



<p><strong>What&#8217;s new fashion-wise that should be on our radar this season?&nbsp;</strong>Stiletto heeled, square toe boots (calf or knee length) will replace last autumn’s chunky soles and for more practical attire, the slim fit trainer with a nod to cycling and hiking (think Adidas, Keen and Salomon) will dominate. And of course, the barrel shaped trouser – but not just in jeans, it’s now featured in tailoring too and looks beautifully pulled together.</p>



<p><strong>What easy adjustments can we make to our existing wardrobes to make them season-ready?</strong> Refresh chunky knits by tucking in at the waist and leaving a peek of a silk camisole untucked below. Dig out any old belts you have – they are here to stay for a while. Also, never underestimate what a dry clean can do to refresh&nbsp; your winter coat/bobbly jumpers.</p>

<p><strong>It&#8217;s hard to know what to wear when it&#8217;s still quite warm yet we want to embrace Autumn, any tips? </strong>Shirts are having a moment and are perfect for mid-season layering. They’re also timeless so wearing shirts that you already have is an easy win. Always have a few long-sleeved white tops on repeat. They are the perfect for mid-season and can be dressed up or down – Arket and COS do gorgeous soft ones with good necklines. Canvas jackets are a fantastic mid-season purchase, particularly in the autumnal tones. And keep your feet warm with some fun socks – if they’re going to be on display (which they should be!), then go bold!</p>



<p><strong>If you had to buy three things for Autumn/Winter, what would they be and why?&nbsp;</strong>A suede coat (short or long) – it may be ‘on trend’ right now but suede, like leather, will always look stylish. The Cos Arch jeans – great shape, great quality, great price. A fabulous pair of boots – I never fail to feel more confident than with a stylish pair of boots on.</p>

<p><strong>What colour schemes are big this Autumn/Winter?&nbsp;</strong>Brown is EVERYWHERE! From chocolate to caramel, there’s no escaping it – and unlike black, there’s a tone for everyone, so embrace it! Green is another colour of the moment, as is navy – just be sure you get the tone right.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-marianna-s-london-nbsp"><strong>Marianna&#8217;s London:&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Best restaurant</strong>: <a href="https://www.ducksoupsoho.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Duck Soup</a> in Soho. Sounds Asian but is actually British sharing plates. The menu is seasonal so there’s always something new to try and the produce is second to none. I once had a simple plate of tomatoes with olive oil and basil…and I am still talking about it! But for me, a great restaurant isn’t just about the food. It’s about the service, the décor and the atmosphere. I’m not a fan of formality or fine dining. Duck Soup is like being in a very stylish home from home. It’s never let me down.</p>



<p><strong>Best bar: </strong>For cocktails, <a href="http://www.threesheets-bar.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Three Sheets</a> in Dalston. It’s teeny tiny with a great atmosphere and they make the best cocktails – nothing too sweet for me. For wine, <a href="https://www.lebeaujolais.london" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Le Beaujoulais</a> in Soho which makes you fee like you’re in 1920s Paris.</p>

<p><strong>Best view: </strong>Probably from the top of <a href="https://www.standardhotels.com/en-GB/london/properties/london" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Standard</a>, Kings Cross which gives you panoramic views of the city and all its beautiful buildings.</p>



<p><strong>Best café: </strong><a href="https://www.kaffee.london" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kaffe</a> on Putney Common. A converted lodge set in a 19<sup>th</sup> Century cemetery that is now an Austrian café.&nbsp;They make the best strudels and cakes in town, fresh every day, and it goes without saying that the coffee is perfect.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Best museum: </strong>It has to be the <a href="https://www.nhm.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Natural History Museum</a>. Worth visiting for the building alone but the exhibitions (both permanent and featured) always serve to remind me how small we humans are.</p>



<p><strong>Best free experience:&nbsp;</strong>Very simple but the <a href="https://www.royalparks.org.uk/visit/parks/richmond-park/isabella-plantation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Isabella Plantation</a> in Richmond Park. Tricky to get to but completely worth the trek. It is my haven.</p>



<p><strong>Best gallery: </strong><a href="https://www.npg.org.uk/whatson/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Portrait Gallery</a> – it has fantastic free exhibitions as well as featured artists. I recently went to the Jenny Saville there and was completely blown away.&nbsp;</p>
