<p>Stylist Amy Bannerman&#8217;s been championing second-hand for decades, and now the fashion industry&#8217;s finally following suit. With an impressive career that&#8217;s seen her rise through the ranks of glossy mags like <em>Elle</em>, <em>InStyle</em> and <em>Cosmopolitan</em> (where she often featured pre-loved), her background&#8217;s led her to the perfect platform to push her message: We don&#8217;t always need to buy new. </p>

<p>Apparently there&#8217;s now enough clothing in existence to dress the next SIX generations (makes you think, right?), so Muddy sat down with her to find out more about her passion for circular fashion and how we can all make a difference. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-you-re-just-back-from-london-fashion-week-how-did-it-go">You&#8217;re just back from London Fashion Week, how did it go?</h2>

<p>It went so well, I&#8217;m still on such a high from it. It really feels like with everything we are doing at eBay, such as initiatives like <a href="https://pages.ebay.co.uk/fashionmonth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eBay Endless Runway</a>, are affecting real change and putting pre-loved into an elevated space.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s an eBay marketplace initiative to include pre-loved pieces as integral parts of major designers&#8217; collections &#8211; this season ERDEM, Altuzarra, Kallmeyer, LUAR and Ahluwalia were are all on board! eBay also staged its own shoppable runway shows featuring pre-loved designers like Simone Rocha and Alexander McQueen, styled by myself in London and stylist Brie Welch in New York. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sounds-like-pre-loved-made-its-mark-at-lfw-is-the-public-attitude-to-vintage-really-changing">Sounds like pre-loved made its mark at LFW.  Is the public attitude to vintage really changing?</h2>



<p>I think this question itself is interesting as I always talk about pre-loved rather than “vintage”. Whilst I love vintage pieces, I think the predominance of the second-hand market is pre-loved everything, from luxury AG bags to sportswear, AG trainers and mid-market, luxury and high street brands. Vintage makes it sound rare and niche when it is just pretty much anything you would buy and need.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Don’t fall for faddy trends like &#8216;brown is the new black&#8217; &#8211; brown has always been “cool” as have all other colours. Work out what your personal style is: What are you comfortable in, what do you always gravitate towards? I have a kind of summer and winter uniform which I come back to season after season, I might update it with some new trainers or a jacket, but the core of my wardrobe remains true to me. If you feel like you need a refresh, then a coat or jacket is a quick way to do this. I love a floor-length cashmere MaxMara coat I got on eBay last winter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-did-your-passion-for-pre-loved-clothing-come-from">Where did your passion for pre-loved clothing come from? </h2>



<p>My love of pre-loved came from some hand-me-downs I received from my cousin when I was around 12 years old. They made me feel like the coolest person in the world. A black pair of Levi’s 501s and a navy scoop neck ribbed t-shirt which she had worn to death, this only made it exponentially cooler to me!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-you-tell-us-a-bit-more-about-your-career-path-in-fashion">Can you tell us a bit more about your career path in fashion?</h2>

<p>At the age of 21 I got a loan from the Prince’s Trust to set up a second-hand clothing stall, I imported everything from Canada and sold it at a stall in Spitalfields. At the same time, I was working at Topshop as a style adviser, I then assisted Bay Garnett, Lucie McCullin (who was at <em>ELLE</em>) and was briefly Katy England’s third&nbsp;assistant. Lucie recommended me to<em> ELLE</em> where I became their Fashion Assistant for four years. I then went freelance and then to <em>InStyle </em>as the Fashion Editor, and eventually to <em>Cosmopolitan</em> as the Fashion Director. </p>



<p>I have always worked with pre-loved in everything I do, even putting Stacey Dooley on the cover of <em>Cosmo</em> wearing Oxfam! I was made redundant from <em>Cosmopolitan </em>while I was on my maternity leave, and around this time eBay asked me if I would style <em>Love Island</em> for them &#8211; categorically the best moment of my career.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-so-you-put-a-spotlight-on-second-hand-via-love-island">So you put a spotlight on second-hand via <em>Love Island</em>?</h2>



<p>Yes! eBay’s partnership with <em>Love Island</em> was a game-changer in the fashion industry &#8211; there&#8217;s a stigma to fast fashion now that wasn&#8217;t there before. </p>

<p>Always think pre-loved first! We don’t need new things when there is so much in existence. Don’t follow trends &#8211; to be truly stylish you need to forge out your own style.&nbsp; Remember that in the UK eBay has over 25K charities selling directly on the platform, so shopping on it means you are giving clothes a second life and supporting lots of great causes too.  </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-your-favourite-item-of-second-hand-clothing-nbsp">What&#8217;s your favourite item of second-hand clothing?<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Ooh at the moment probably my Marks &amp; Spencer taffeta skirt. I already owned it in a size 10, but it no longer fits me post having a baby so I’ve been looking for one in my size since I had my son four years ago and just found it &#8211; for £3! I haven’t taken it off since, it is comfy <em>and</em> glamorous, the best combo. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-does-your-love-of-pre-loved-extend-to-your-home-styling-nbsp">Does your love of pre-loved extend to your home styling?&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Yes, everything in my home is pre-loved. My Ligne Rosset and Howard Keith sofas, my B&amp;B Italia bed, my solid oak dining table and artwork, top to bottom, and my car and my son’s toys, bikes and treehouse, top to bottom pre-loved!</p>

<p><strong>Best restaurant</strong>: <a href="https://www.decimo.london">Decimo</a> at the Standard for the BEST spicy&nbsp;Marg and I&#8217;ve never had a dud meal. The atmosphere feels supremely British to me too.</p>



<p><strong>Best museum: </strong><a href="https://www.vam.ac.uk/young?srsltid=AfmBOorSe0xOI-c6agWdsiaMctcqy6-5MZoq-C_o1JVtFzNFzPIqlNEm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Young V&amp;A</a> in Bethnal Green. We have whiled away hours there, it is pure magic for children.</p>



<p><strong>Best free thing to do</strong>: I love Victoria Park in the summer, the slide is legendary, and the splash pad is the best I’ve been to.</p>



<p><strong>Best view:</strong> The one from <a href="https://www.rmg.co.uk/royal-observatory" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Royal Observatory Greenwich</a>. This is always where I would take my Canadian relatives &#8211; travel there on one of the boats from Embankment. The prefect Sunday activity and good for your lungs too.</p>



<p><strong>Best shop:</strong> <a href="https://www.beyondretro.com/pages/store-locator-brick-lane?srsltid=AfmBOopmNhJiUbmmVbH0ioUkBNCxCBxVP8OxNt89uoi4icfz8XljogvU" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beyond Retro</a> in Bethnal Green &#8211; the OG in Brick Lane was the epicentre of pre-loved in the East End. Their HQ is now in Stoke Newington, and they also sell on eBay, I have aways found them to have an excellent selection of curve sizing too, you just have to rummage.</p>
