<p>A lot! The proposition of a high-quality co-ed day school in the middle of London is clearly a compelling one, particularly as it&#8217;s a purpose-built, brand-new building. Parents really want to know that their child is nurtured and cared for and known as an individual, as well as challenged academically. Aside from the academics and co-curricular offering, we’re also bringing a kind of boarding-style strong pastoral care into a day setting.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-are-you-planning-to-open"><strong>When are you planning to open?</strong></h3>



<p>I joined in September 2024 and we’re opening the doors in September 2025 with around 100 students across Years 7, 8 and 9. Then we&#8217;ll add a year at a time from the bottom, so eventually Y9 will be our Y13 cohort, with around 500 pupils. We’re part of the Inspired Group (a group of 119 schools worldwide) and one of the things all Inspired schools share is three key pillars: Academics, Sport, and Creative and Performing Arts. So, whilst we are absolutely an academic London Day School, we have a strong focus on sport and creative and performing Arts as well.</p>

<p>Having spent my entire career in very old schools where you have the joys of maintaining a Grade I estate [Page was previously Deputy Head at both Harrow and Westminster Schools], the opportunities offered by a brand-new building are amazing. Wetherby Pembridge is an eight-floor purpose-built school, with a huge glass atrium, which floods the whole building with light. At the bottom of the Atrium is the library, symbolically at the heart of the school. The entire lower ground floor is a professional standard theatre, with retractable seating that can also be used for basketball with hoops that come down from the ceiling.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Further up the building, there’s an entire floor of sport so we can run a full PE programme on site, in addition to our outdoor opportunities. It has a big open-plan area where the kids can kick a ball around, a mixed martial arts zone, fencing piste, cardio area and a separate weights gym. For outdoor sports, we have exceptional grounds spread across some 15 acres at our Wetherby Pembridge Wood Lane facility, just 15 minutes from the school and offering state-of-the-art facilties where students can enjoy full-size floodlit grass and astroturf pitches for football, rugby, or hockey, along with cricket pitches, tennis and netball courts. Every student will play outdoor sport twice a week using these outstanding facilities.</p>

<p>Musically there’s a recital space, a music tech studio and music practice rooms, as you’d expect – there&#8217;ll be a school orchestra and the usual ensembles. On the sixth floor is the dining hall which has an enormous terrace and the best views in London. It’s a great spot to have lunch or chill out.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-are-you-trendy-or-traditional"><strong>Are you trendy or traditional?</strong></h3>



<p>We’re quite traditional in our approach, so it’s GSCEs and A Levels only, with Maths, English, Science, Ancient and Modern Languages (French, Spanish, German and Latin initially), Humanities and the Creative and Performing Arts. The main sports for boys will be rugby, football, athletics and cricket, and for the girls it will be netball, hockey, football, cricket and athletics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I&#8217;m very big on living your values and embedding them into the school culture. Our values are kindness, respect, resilience and ambition. They&#8217;re a big part of building community, but it also creates a framework, as students develop their own values that will serve them in their future lives. We have the job of getting our students the qualifications that get them into the best universities and the widest range of jobs. But I also want them to take away a moral framework, of wanting to go into those organisations and communities and make them better.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pastorally we plan to do that by creating a continuity of contact for the pupils and parents right through the school – that kind of openness in communication is incredibly important. We will create vertical house systems with the same Housemaster looking after the pupils right through the school and seeing them on a daily basis&nbsp; – like a boarding master. Tutors will be phase specialists – children will have a tutor for Lower School, a different one for Middle School and a third for Sixth Form – who focus on them during that stage of their school life.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-will-you-have-a-sendco"><strong>Will you have a SENDCo?</strong></h3>



<p>Yes, we’re recruiting at full time SENDCo and given our small initial cohort that’s an early signal of our commitment to making sure that students are well provided for there. My approach to SEND is very much about having the SENDCo work with the broader staff to make our mainstream education accessible to students with diverse learning needs. It’s not just about one-on-one teaching; their wider role is making sure all staff are equipped to make their teaching accessible.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-until-it-opens-wetherby-pembridge-is-still-a-blank-canvas-is-that-something-parents-should-lean-into-or-be-worried-about"><strong>Until it opens,</strong> <strong>Wetherby Pembridge is still a blank canvas. Is that something parents should lean into or be worried about?</strong></h3>



<p>We’re new and not new at the same time, which is a really good position to be in! As the name of the school indicates, we&#8217;re building on the existing success of Wetherby Prep (boys) and Pembridge Hall (girls) through our co-educational Senior School setting. On the other hand, for me and my founding team the advantage of starting from scratch as is that it&#8217;s a rare opportunity to put into practice hundreds of years of educational experience, and cherry pick the things we know work well.</p>

<p>Any Headmaster who stands up and says, “my school is definitely perfect for your child” is lying. You can’t be everything to everyone. The children who want to embrace new things and get out of their comfort zone and bring lots to the school community will be the most comfortable at Wetherby Pembridge. For example, our sports programme is designed to encourage students to try a range of activities – from cricket to martial arts, from dancing to yoga – in high-quality facilities.&nbsp; We want to create opportunities where pupils can try new things and not worry about failure or not being good at them. At the same time, it’s important to emphasise that we are an academic school – it&#8217;s in nobody&#8217;s interest to come here and bump along the bottom.&nbsp;</p>
